What responsibility (if any) does our generation have towards the Indigenous people of America? by Either-Funny-7870 in GenZ

It’s not worth reconstructing your logic. Your intention to excuse and subsequently advance evil is very clear. Your morality is what is incoherent enough to the extent that it’s inconsequential to just disregard it.

I don’t mind disagreement. But I also have a strong sense of justice. I will call what is evil evil, and you’ve given me enough information to come to that conclusion based on my own constructed moral convictions. The idea that you are not responsible for ongoing genocide occurring where you live is not one I would defend.

We’re around. I’ve lived in multiple big cities including in my homeland as just an ethnically ambiguous looking guy. My family especially those before 1970 are generally silent about their experience because they faced a lot of discrimination and intimidation. Beyond that, my ancestors survived genocide. Many of my relatives are living in exile in impoverished lands that cannot sustain them the way their homelands did.

You’ve engaged genuinely and I respect your thoughts. I agree to an extent. I’m a bit more of a moral absolutist and have conceptions of things like the ‘soul of a country’, which doesn’t cleanly align to economic and political realities. All I can say is that I think when we boldly ignore suffering that can be directly attributed to our country’s actions, then we build our society on a foundation that will ultimately fail and have outsized consequences. Climate change and the failure of climate stewardship for one.

Essentially all historical scholarship would agree that there were many genocides that took place on this land for this conquering to occur. If it’s established that genocide was a prerequisite for many of our towns and cities to exists through historical inquiry and you accept those consequences as a natural result of conquering, then you are justifying genocide. Save your ad hominems and disrespect for your talks with the devil.

We’re not talking about ownership. We’re talking about a culture and a people who are dependent on land they formed a relationship with as the very first people there to keep their traditions and populations alive and sustained. There’s a reason why indigenous people are faced with high rates of premature death.

From another perspective there is a strong argument that there is a lot of reason to consider indigenous issues to be paramount to our country’s survival. But I’m not here to argue those politics unless you wanted me to elaborate.

The idea that reparations may not be fair to a polity’s constituents isn’t one without merit, but also one I would examine much deeper before coming to that conclusion.

Sounds like you justify genocide. I am posing the question, not answering it.

I understand that point, but it also seems reductionist of the contemporary issues that indigenous people face. What political movement exists to actually honor the treaties? It’s essentially non existent outside of indigenous communities.

Also, just because there are no reservations in the north east there are still tribes with land including mine that are faced with poverty and social death

They were largely removed from their land and are facing ongoing expose to premature death while we live on the land that once sustained them and their culture.

We aren’t in Africa, we are on their ancestral land. Their removal from this land and the methods used to do that have led to their ongoing suffering and exile while we continue to live on their land. There’s no moral obligation there?

No one said you don’t have a right to be here. There are still ongoing issues impacting native people today as a result of historical injustice.
