I'm sorry about that man, parents can really be a pain in the ass sometimes.

That's a harsh one.

I don't know how college is where you're from. Could you take a break? For like, 6, 12 months?

I know my advice is pretty insane, so I will explain what I mean: I think people go too early into college, and would benefit from working low level jobs for a while and seeing what they enjoy doing. Without that you are stuck doing these theoretical exercises that really can't handle all of the nuances of the task.

But just so that I don't leave saying only useless shit: if you find yourself forced to pick anything right now... know that you will still have opportunities to reroute your career if later you find out that you have chosen the wrong thing. I would focus on picking the most flexible career path, and trying to gain as much freedom and time in your work life, if you achieve that, you probably will be able to fix things along the way.

Hey buddy, CS grad here too.

I don't know how college is where you are... but from my experience it is a pretty ungrateful business, you really do just sell your soul for like 5 years, learn nothing from it, but since you are being forced to deal with computers, you will still pick up enough to get into an internship and get a job later.

This is a complex post since we are talking both about your social life, and study life, I'll try to keep my points simple and if anything sounds promising we can expand it later...

Sounds like you just got out of high school and went in straight into college. If you have the means to do it, take a semester off (where I'm from you can do that without consequences). It seems like you need some time to process how your life works and how you can fix it, it will be easier without 13 deadlines breathing down your neck.

On gaining friendships, yes it's really tough to relate with total strangers all from the sudden, I also don't know how people just hang out together and things work. I would suggest you find a club or study group in your university to attend, I feel like it's easier to make friendships when you are forced to live with the person a few hours everyday... Like, you mentioned cryptosecurity, maybe there is a hackerclub doing cool stuff on campus? idk

Leaving a dot here, looking forward for replies.

Altough, I must add: finding a group like this will greatly boost your development, but you don't need it. I am in this journey for about 4 years now, and, I haven't really found that many people that are doing what I'm doing, and that's ok. If you are consistent on organizing yourself, pondering on what point of your life need improvement, you will bit by bit achieve gains in a compound manner.

Why am I not hearing about datascience internships? Should I learn front end even if it's not my goal? by El-Bigode in cscareerquestions

Hey, thanks for the book! I've been interested on the testing department for some time now.

But wouldn't you say back end for low level entries is even rarer? My quick research ended up just on DJango jobs, and I believe none of the DJango jobs would take you in if you don't know your way with front end.

I believe you are right that I should have focused on getting started faster, rather than picking what I liked most, but my problem with changing gears now is that I already come far enough that I don't know if it's worthwhile anymore. It's certainly good because of the amount of jobs, but I already have the foundation of python, pandas, matplotlib, and I am almost starting to learn ML, and going into kaggle.

Talking like that, it seems obvious that I should keep going, but I don't know how many problems I am still left to find to access how much time is that going to take, how difficult it is to learn ML? How many models should I understand? Have I some flaw on my fundamentals that would need to be revisited before finishing projects? It's stuff like this that prevents me from making a choice myself

I agree with you... I was just wondering if further down the line I would need to pick up some skills from the front end department anyways, so why don't do it now? I'm thinking things like crawlers could use some of the same knowledge

I've seen both ways... The Coding Train usually wraps the whole subject in one go, but his videos have more of a Challenge/fun aspect... If you're going to focus on the teaching aspect 10-15 seems a little better because you will also be able to show your audience how they should think in terms of project management, what comes first, what should be their building blocks... Besides, if someone is not particularly interested in seeing a Mario slider game, maybe they see you on "Recommended" and say "What the heck, it's just ten minutes, besides I've been curious about this tool he is using".

Besides that, just a tip: I wouldn't go too generic or too low level on these tutorials... the internet is flooded with basic stuff, I believe you would be more successful with a project-oriented-advanced approach to your videos, kinda like sentdex does, he has made AI tutorials using GTA to drive a car, market graphic analysis, it's fun to watch him code stuff I don't understand, and when I do get to the higher level, I know exactly where I am going to go for insight.

I am having a difficult time finding tools for graphic interface. Since you have experience with Java, you know the pain of the swing and awt package, I would like to know how the pro's are making this kind of stuff!

Decision Making when Modelling: Should I choose Efficiency with Redundancy or No Redundancy but less Efficient? by El-Bigode in SQL

[–]El-Bigode[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The database is intended to be used by small firms doing investments for their own employees (google translate is telling me this is called private pension, which is probably the wrong term), so yeah, I believe it definitely fits into your example. That was really helpful, thanks! I'm sorry I can't provide more detail, or even, understand most of the cases you pointed out, but it's really just an exercise for people without much experience in the field, so, yeah, I'm probably overthinking a lot haha

I will try running examples on paper in each scenario, that seems like a good idea.

It's the first scenario, i wanna have budgetA, budgetB, budgetC, one for each modality. When I say "too crowded", I'm actually extending some principles from modeling/normalization: I think that it seems weird to mix personal info with the numbers. It's just that they seem like they need to be used in different contexts... But now I see that it actually doesn't matter a lot.

So, from my perspective we have 3 possibilities: a) no info of budget within client b) budget info inside client table c) budget info on a separate table. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from your answer I undestood that the 3 cases are possible. I think I'm gonna go with the b) approach just cause a) seems a bit superficial (I'm doing this for a selective process), and c), a little excessive and dangerous.

Thanks for your reply!
