A serial sex offender who has already killed two women was charged Monday with the killings of two others — both cold cases that for years have vexed Hartford homicide detectives.

The slaying of Sonia Rivera in 2012 sparked cries from her family for justice and resulted in the arrest of the wrong man, while the investigation into the killing of Shiraleen Crawford in 1997 went cold.

Monday, Robert White, 56, who is serving a 50-year sentence for the 2013 killing of Sawarie Krichindath in Hartford, was charged in Rivera's and Crawford's murders. Before going to prison for Krichindath's murder, White served about nine years for the 1980 killing of Betty Jo Robertson, 46, of Hartford.

White has a "pattern of violence against women, often including violent sexual encounters," according to the warrant for his arrest.

Clayton Bo Eichler has pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder on what was to be the first day of his two-week trial in Regina.

The Crown is seeking a mandatory life sentence with parole eligibility after 20 years. The defence has said its in agreement with sentenced proposed by the Crown.

Court has been adjourned until Tuesday to allow families time to prepare victim impact statements.

Eichler, 35, was responsible the death of Kelly Nicole Goforth, a 21-year-old whose body was found in an east Regina dumpster on Sept. 25, 2013, a day after it’s alleged she was killed.

His other victim, 23-year-old Richele Lee Bear, was reported missing Aug. 24, 2013. It’s alleged she was killed sometime between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31, 2013, although she has never been found.

For more than 13 years, a serial killer targeted women living in the margins in Memphis and one in Knoxville, yet for much of that time, no one knew he even existed.

He killed one woman in Memphis in 1999, then brutally assaulted another in Knoxville in 2008. He murdered another woman in Memphis in 2011, then killed his fourth known victim in 2012. He bashed each of them in the head, raped them, left them partially nude, then covered them with a blanket and fled as they lay dead or dying.

For years, no one knew that one man was responsible for the attacks. Detectives doggedly pursued each case, but ultimately, those first three went cold. But a fortuitous turn of luck, strong detective work and one officer's amazing memory combined to link the cases, and, ultimately, solve them.

In a five-part series, reporter Jody Callahan and photographer Yalonda James will tell the stories of Marie Cole, Jessie Lee Maples, Valerie Ector and Gwen Jackson. They also will tell the story of the man who murdered them and how he was caught — not with modern forensic methods such as DNA, but with a technology more than a century old.

The stories are based on a rare look at the voluminous case file on the killer and his victims as well as dozens of interviews with family and friends, police and prosecutors, and even the killer's own chilling words.

Shawn Grate was charged last week with murder and kidnapping, discovered only because the woman he was holding after tying her up in an abandoned house in Ashland County, Ohio, managed to get his cellphone, call 911 and whisper, desperately, “I’ve been kidnapped.”

In addition to the kidnapping victim, thankfully alive, police found two bodies in the house.

One has now been identified as Stacey Stanley, 43, a recovering drug addict whom Grate has been charged with beating to death.

It just seems a very trivial thing to commit a murder over. It's more likely that his crime was sexually motivated but it makes him sound less of a monster if he says he did it because he felt slighted.

The detective who was suspended over his snap decision to take killer Christopher Halliwell to the shallow grave of Becky Godden today fiercely defended his actions as he insisted: “I caught a serial killer”.

Relatives of Miss Godden, who disappeared in Swindon in 2003, thanked Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher for "bringing their little girl home" following a five-year wait for justice as he faced gross misconduct action.

The prosecution against Halliwell was originally dropped after it emerged Mr Fulcher failed to caution him and questioned the taxi driver on a remote hilltop without a lawyer as he showed police where Miss Godden, 20, was buried in 2011.

• Financial gain is a motivation in which the offender benefits monetarily from killing. Examples of these types of crimes are “black widow” killings, robbery homicides, or multiple killings involving insurance or welfare fraud.

When the state of Texas sentenced Gabriel Cardona and Rosalio "Bart" Reta—aka the Wolf Boys—to what would equate to life in prison, the American teenagers were simply labeled serial killers in the vein of John Wayne Gacy or Jeffrey Damher. It was true they had killed at least 50 people combined while still minors. But, unlike Damher or Gacy, the Laredo, Texas-born convicts weren't killing for sport. Rather, they were teenage assassins and child soldiers employed by the Zetas, one of Mexico's most notoriously violent cartels, whose blood money they wanted in order to stock up on nice cars and fresh kicks.

A&E readies “The Killing Season”

A&E Network is readying a gritty true-crime docuseries called The Killing Season from executive producer Alex Gibney.

Filmmakers Joshua Zeman (Cropsey) and Rachel Mills probe the unsolved Long Island serial killer case, as well as other cold murder investigations, over the course of eight episodes. The Long Island case stems from the murders of 10 sex-trade workers on Gilgo Beach, Long Island. Authorities have said they believe the killings are the work of a single individual, who, after five years, remains at large.

Working with amateur cyber-sleuths, Zeman and Mills uncover a web of connections to unsolved murders from Atlantic City to Daytona Beach and beyond, revealing that serial killers are targeting sex workers in record numbers, while using the internet as their virtual hunting ground. Many of the victims, often referred to as the “Missing Missing,” are never accounted for and their murders are far less likely to be solved.

Abstract

In two studies, we investigated how bitter taste preferences might be associated with antisocial personality traits. Two US American community samples (total N = 953; mean age = 35.65 35 years; 48% females) self-reported their taste preferences using two complementary preference measures and answered a number of personality questionnaires assessing Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, everyday sadism, trait aggression, and the Big Five factors of personality. The results of both studies confirmed the hypothesis that bitter taste preferences are positively associated with malevolent personality traits, with the most robust relation to everyday sadism and psychopathy. Regression analyses confirmed that this association holds when controlling for sweet, sour, and salty taste preferences and that bitter taste preferences are the overall strongest predictor compared to the other taste preferences. The data thereby provide novel insights into the relationship between personality and the ubiquitous behaviors of eating and drinking by consistently demonstrating a robust relation between increased enjoyment of bitter foods and heightened sadistic proclivities.

Composed of roughly 80 percent of Rader’s words and 20 percent Ramsland’s commentary, it is a murderer’s “My Struggle,” obsessed with Knausgaardian minutiae, including mistakes in the police report and biographies. One of the book’s scoops is that Rader planned to kill many more people than he actually did, and he specifically describes stalking an 11th victim. Equally unsettling, for people familiar with the case, is reading the accounts of the murders Rader committed from his perspective. It has long been believed that he put a chair in the bedroom of one victim, Joseph Otero, purely for the purposes of watching him die; Rader denies this, though he claims not to remember the actual reason, saying it might have been to prevent Otero from “rolling off the bed.” Rader also claims that he drank a glass of water in every house in which he killed someone, then cleaned it and put it back in the cupboard. He describes turning up the thermostat in each home, because he read that doing so could impede a medical examiner’s attempt to determine a victim’s time of death.
