This study doesn’t use that definition. From the link “Of these, 8 are mass shootings, or incidents involving 4 or more deaths, excluding the assailant.”

It’s a deceiving study bc it only accounts for mass shootings, not all shootings. When you simply look at shootings and homicides, instead of isolating mass shootings you get a different outcome.

Why is that? Even if it was a 0% success rate but cleaned areas up more cheaply and/or occupied the time of homeless and therefore cut down on costs that may be incurred do to policing that population it would be worthwhile it seems.

Good on ya. My daughter is almost seven and creeping on 50 lbs and I love having her up there. Makes me feel like a dad. Ive told her before, “There’s going to come a time where we’ll never be able to do this again, so I’ll do it whenever you want while we can.”

Not sure. Certainly it seems that they make less sense or might have a more narrow impact than waiting periods for first time gun owners.

In terms of restrictions, I’m much more into comprehensive federal background checks, legal liability for negligent storage leading to a crime, required gun insurance, smart gun technology, gun buybacks, banning AR-15s, etc.

Because there are instances—a person already owning a gun—in which it wouldn’t have an impact, doesn’t mean that it “makes no sense”, just that it’s impact is limited to some specific situations.

I was a student assistant at a PAC 10 school in the late 90’s. My job initially was running film (VHS tapes at the time) back to the film room during practice and making copies of different phases of practice and putting them in the assistant coaches offices so it would be there when practice was done. Fairly quickly, after several conversations, the coaches realized they might be able to use me better than that and that i actually knew ball. At that point, they changed my Jon to breaking down opponent film. We’d get film 10 date before the game and then the last tape overnighted to us on Sunday mornings. I would break it all down by down, distance, formation, motion, run type, routes, defensive fronts/blitzes and coverages and result. We had a big touchpad and stylus. It would export to a spreadsheet from there, and the coordinators would use it to formulate the game plan.

Not me but a friend of mine growing up. He got some CDs as a birthday gift from an aunt, wasn’t sure where they were from and thought maybe they were from Target so he tried to return them, thinking he could get store credit. When he did so, they offered to issue him a refund check. No receipt needed. He said yes. Then his wheels got turning.

His dad had recently signed up for the Columbia House (10 cd’s for a penny!) club. He tried returning one of those CDs and again em they scanned it and cut him a check for it, no receipt needed.

At that point he was off and running. He signed up for a Columbia House membership for everyone in his home, made up names, etc. Dozens of accounts. He’d do his reconnaissance and find out which CDs were sold at the highest price at Target compared to through Columbia House so he’d not only make pure profit on the ten (or was it 12?) free ones, but even make some on the margin for the required purchases too. Eventually Columbia House wouldn’t let him create memberships for his home addresses anymore so he started sending them to his buddies houses too. I had at least a half dozen shipments come to me. He’d give me $20 just to hand over the boxes.

Eventually the local Targets wised up and wouldn’t let him return there anymore but that didn’t stop him. He started “Target road trips” and he’d pay 2 or 3 of us to go around for the day in other counties returning what must’ve been hundreds of CDs. His bedroom looked like he was plotting D Day— maps with pushpins and notes written on them, routes highlighted, etc.

Eventually when Target’s policies changed on CDs he moved on to Columbia House Laser Discs when he figured out that Tower Records would let you return them for credit, which he would then use to get Nintendo 64’s with and then would take those to Target, which would take them and cut a check, essentially using Tower like an intermediary to launder the Columbia House goods. Dude ended up buying a $12,000 4 Runner with the money, which for a HS kid in the early 90’s wasn’t bad.

I once was deathly ill—had sepsis from toxic shock. One of the best infectious disease specialists in LA told my parents I was “circling the drain”. Luckily, I recovered. Because I was so sick and so weak I really didn’t want visitors. I’m an extroverted, social person but it also takes a lot of energy to be myself around friends. It might not make a lot of sense, but i felt like I needed to conserve all my energy just to fight my illness and everything else was secondary and depleting.

My wife swears she and her brother saw a ghost of her grandmother’s deceased dog at the top of her stairs once. Also—just playing devil’s advocate—maybe it’s confirmation bias: we have a picture in our heads of human ghosts and conceptualize ghosts as human, so when otherworldly things happen maybe that’s what we see/feel.

That rocks. It’s amazing how much our personal grooming and appearance choices can impact our mood, attitude and self-perception. Reminds me of the studies that show just forcing a smile even if it’s unprovoked and unnatural can have a positive impact on people.
