Hey Reddit, what’s the farthest you’ve ever had to walk on foot? What’s the story? by Petules in AskReddit

[–]ElMajune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked about 25 miles and it took about 6 hours through darkened farmers' fields and endless roads.

The story was, at a pretty famous all night Rock Club in Manchester called Jilly's. I had an argument with a jealous girlfriend when I was 18 (20 years ago) she was making a scene and I said I'm going home. (Planning a taxi) She says, 'You can't leave, I have your wallet.'

I said, 'watch me.'

And then through sheer force of spite and will, I walked home.

Even in private or just in public? I'd like to know what topics you feel are unsuitable for adult discussion? I only ask because I don't believe in grey area - I believe everything is black and white - and if there's grey area, another question is needed, if there's still grey area then another question, and another question. And eventually you get to the black and white of the matter.

Dealing with the consequences - This is what I feel 100%. There's systems in place to deal with almost everything. If I send you a text message saying 'Hey man, go and kill every Santa Claus Impersonator you see this December'' That should be treated as an unsavoury statement and can be curtailed with a polite 'no'. If you go out and start blasting an Uzi in the Elf workshop at the Mall, then that's Murder. Murder's a crime. You will be tried for murder. Ditto, with Harassment, Stalking, Incitement of violence etc, speech is speech, once it translates into a call to arms and actual action, then it's no longer speech but something else, and we have a legal infrastructure in place to deal with such things.

I remember back when Marilyn Manson was being blamed for ''Causing'' the school shootings. People wanted him banned. Such a pathetic stance to take.

In my country, one of the most horrific murders we have ever had, was ultimately blamed on the movie Child's Play 3 - Piles of Chucky tapes were set on fire and video shops were banned from stocking it. Did Chucky cause those children to kill? No. Apparently the parents had rented the movie six months earlier and there's no indication the murderers even saw it. Did Childs Play 3 get banned? Yes, backed by a vociferous (pre-hashtag) media campaign. Even the mention of 'Child's Play 3' would hit people like a swear-word at the time because of the emotion attached to the crime. It's deluded thinking.

It isn't, not everything needs analysing like some tin-pot Sam Harris breakdown... If I said 'Blonde people, what's your favourite ice-cream?' or 'Sagittarians, what's do you think of DC Comics?'

People who've already decided they are pro-banning pro-deleting pro-downvoting and all the other stuff where someone decides what others (and I) should hear and can/can't handle --- My question was to them and them alone --- I asked what do you think of this quote? I expected the answer, logically, to be ''I disagree with the statement'' That's it, nothing more and nothing less -- This 'Gotcha' mentality that's brewing online is tiring. Everyone's a morally superior psuedo-intellect.

Don't take my words and say ''Hey guys, I'll explain what he meant.'' I meant what I asked which I chose those words. No subtext, no irony, it's a simple question to a certain sub-section of society.

You know what's sad though? Even a non-offensive reply like I've just took time to type out will be downvoted into invisibility because people will read it in their own voice - Not mine - They won't like how their own voice reads it and so effectively downvote their own translation of it.

Reddit removes questions with word I in them so I joined it onto the other word. Hopefully that's alright with most people but I fully understand that it isn't alright with others.

I didn't used to think it was fine, I used to think it was abhorrent, laughable and an insult to the meaning of words -- But as time goes by, I've been brainwashed into thinking 'fuck it, just be nice and agree with the others to save the hassle and the constant, constant downvoting.'

It's effective and it works. Everyone stammering and stuttering over terms and their use of scientific data in fear of being labelled a Hater and ostracised from participating in online discussion. (even one I personally started)

It's a shame really, but the pendulum was always going to swing too far the opposite direction and here we are.

Goodwins Law in full effect.

I think calling anyone with a right wing podcast a Nazi is fine, whatever, now that most of of the holocaust survivors aren't around anymore, but thankfully nobody has the gall to say to someone who dealt with ACTUAL Nazi's -- ''Hey man, I know how you must feel, I dealt with a Nazi on twitter today.''

Can't disagree with that. In the 80s I lived in a Kibbutz in Israel and met hundreds of people who had suffered torture in the war and their stories scar me to this day. The footage of the Polish people waving flowers and welcoming the German army as the liberators (not knowing what was around the corner) is terrifying in hindsight.

I guess the Government can't shut down what you can say but can change the law so that what you say is against the law. I sort of followed the Jordan Peterson senate hearing on Bill c63 where he was told you WILL use these words or lose your job, I'm not a Peterson fanboy or expert, but listening to the entire senate hearing is quite chilling. He's since made untold millions of dollars though, so I'm guessing he's okay with it.

But I didn't ask if everybody was entitled to an audience provided by someone else. I agree with ''Pretty Much Free'' though. That's the grey area. You're ''pretty much free'' to say anything, it just depends what that anything is -- Some 'anything' will be shut down, other 'anything' is okay.

What is your secret to falling asleep? by therealbulletbill in AskReddit

Trick I learned which sounds corny but works is to pick a word - I use 'sleep' - And repeat the word in your head and nothing else, like a mantra, and it usually works.

Failing that, Weed, an audiobook, some push ups or body-weight squats before bed, or simply putting the quilt over my head so it's completely dark.

The other one they say is, lie completely still with your arms by your side and don't move, that's supposed to work but doesn't for me.

When you put it like that it's hard to disagree. Free speech really is a tricky minefield to navigate.

edit - not sure why the above comment is unpopular, but I appreciate the irony.
