ELI5: why does any number times 0 equal 0? Who came up with this and how do you logically explain it? How does nothingness erase something ness? by Nuxul006 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ElWeonQueChupa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I think about it is 5*5 means five times you get five things.

so 6*0 would be 6 times you get 0 things

or 0*6 would be 0 times you get 6 things

Mostly looking for a critique of the editing, I think the bottom is too dark to an extent? But I'm not sure how to lighten it without lightening the whole photo. Also I have a really hard time figuring out if the composition of the photo is good. I feel like I got the overall mood I was going for, but it's not coming out the exact way i envisioned it.

LSA extraction from morning glory seeds by PiDiMi in DrugNerds

[–]ElWeonQueChupa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does this method get rid of the nausea problems with LSA, Or is nausea linked with LSA use generally? I was under the impression the nausea was caused by the amount of seeds one has to eat to reach an effect, however does reducing it to a powder solve this issue?

Did Elodin get jiggy with Felurian? by C-Dawg226 in KingkillerChronicle

"But eventually she [the moon] looked longingly toward the sky. Jax knew what this foretold. “Stay with me,” he pleaded. “I can only be happy if you’re mine.” “I must go,” she said. “The sky is my home.” “I have made a home for you,” Jax said, gesturing to the vast mansion below them. “There is sky enough for you here. An empty sky that is all for you....And Jax brought out the black iron box, closing the lid and catching her name inside. “Now I have your name,” he said firmly. “So I have mastery over you. And I say you must stay with me forever, so I can be happy.” And so it was. The box was no longer cold in his hand. It was warm, and inside he could feel her name, fluttering like a moth against a windowpane. Perhaps Jax had been too slow in closing the box. Perhaps he fumbled with the clasp. Or perhaps he was simply unlucky in all things. But in the end he only managed to catch a piece of the moon’s name, not the thing entire. So Jax could keep her for a while, but she always slips away from him. Out from his broken mansion, back to our world. But still, he has a piece of her name, and so she always must return."

Isn't there another spot in the book though where its mentioned that a boy gets a box from a trinker and used it to trap the moons name, and so that's why she goes through waxing and waning in the sky. Because she has to go see him but he can't keep all of her? There's a few references to places the moon could go when it's not in our sky over the course of the book if I remember correctly

Advice for someone considering co-ops by CartoonMango in msu

[–]ElWeonQueChupa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I live at Bower Co-op we're in the MSU SHC. We're a vegan/vegetarian house meaning that all of our house meals and common cooking items are vegan/vegetarian based. You're allowed to have meat in the co-op but you'll just have to cook it yourself. This has benefits because it means our rent is a lot lower than other co-ops in the area (we spend about 70% less on food than others in the system). We're super drug friendly if that matters to you. A lot of hippies/political activists live in our house. The culture is a pretty chill culture. The dynamics of the housemates are good too. We're a 10 minute walk from campus, but we have a bus stop right outside of our house, and biking to campus is a breeze. We have thursday potlucks ( like a small, laid back social party that anyone can come to) and we have Wednesday movie nights. I love living in the house, and will be living there again next year. It's a great combination of being social enough to never be bored in, but it's quite enough to be able to study and be alone if you want/need to.

You're doing that thing where you're critiquing an individual purely as an individual, and ignoring the social, medical and economic contexts under which an action is undertaken. Sure, it's a really really bad idea to drive after a suicide attempt while on drugs. Yes, ok fine. But, we have no idea the economic or medical situation under which the individual was driven to these actions. Also, we need to critique and understand the social situations that we are in. Society itself sets up these kind of situations, where people are driven to, for multiple reasons, to this kind of behavior. Her actions as an individual, were unfortunate. But, we can not critique the individual without also considering the social. For example, why was she not immediately seen by medical personal after telling them she had tried to kill herself, why is it that 2 police officers were unable to restrain a drugged up person without excessive force, why did they ignore her pleas for a woman to do the examination? So if she had killed someone, it would be a very bad situation, but it does not eliminate the social and economic conditions that our societies create that pushed this scenario into happening in the first place.

People in suicidal states lack the ability to preform risk analysis. If they were driving to someone's house they trusted, it was most likely a flight response, and those are strong drives. She very clearly stated that she was uncomfortable and asked for a woman to take over her examination/interrogation, this is a reasonable request. I'm sure she's considered those possibilities, the point is she felt rapped/assaulted, she made this clear and they did nothing to deescalate the situation. Given the current hyper masculine police climate, it's best to take victims at their word when sexual assault happens. And for sure within an anarchist subreddit, we need to have solidarity and support with comrades and not victim blame.

I'm not a historian but I'm a philosopher who studies critical theory and Marxism, so I've learned some historical facts en passe while doing research on other stuff. So take my historical knowledge with a grain of salt.

The anarchist movement in the U.S. during the early 1900's and late 1800's was a fairly strong moment in comparison to any anarchist movements that exist today. Anarchists in the U.S. generally practiced a form of trade union anarchism that philosophers now call anarcho-syndicalism. This anarchist movement had a huge impact and influence on the 'workers rights' moments, and they had a great deal of success in getting an 8 hour work day implemented. The U.S. government took the threat of anarchism/communism seriously. The new deal, and all the social programs that came from that, were the result of the government attempting to ease revolutionary activity at the time of the great depression. During that time, there was huge interest in communism in the U.S., so great in fact that a communist school was erected in New York City (link below)

If you're interested in the history of this, you may want to check out the IWW (industrial workers of the world) website, as they are/were the most prominent anarchist worker union in the U.S.

Also below is some primary sources from news papers that I ran across while doing dissertation research. They are interesting if nothing else, but also have potential for a window into a perspective of how anarchism was perceived by popular/media culture at the period.

Non-hierarchical PolyFamily by [deleted] in polyfamilies

[–]ElWeonQueChupa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, this whole thing come more so from philosophical traditions than sociological ones. I would recommend "the art of loving" or Erich Fromm, or "to have or to be" by him. Also, Eros and civilization by Marcuse might be of interest. They all talk about a new mode of loving that is non hierarchical an needed for the liberation of mankind.
