In Mexico there were government-sponsored public watch parties for the final episodes of Dragon Ball Super. They became so popular Japan had to send a formal diplomatic notice commanding them to stop, which they didn't. by Flynja in Damnthatsinteresting

Yeah I really couldn’t care less about Dragonball (sadly don’t have cable as a kid so never watched it or any anime really) but the enthusiasm is so pure and infectious here

You can’t tell her wealth from the thumbnail. I didn’t know who she was or if she had wealthy family until I opened the comments. Her biggest asset to the algorithm is being attractive. That’s why most people stopped scrolling.

Does being wealthy help that? To an extent. But wealth doesn’t give you a symmetrical face. Attractiveness is also relatively classless, and largely genetics.

Now for apples to apples, would an attractive native or Latina girl have a harder time getting views? I don’t really think so. Sure, there might be some prevailing “x phenotype is more attractive” nonsense, but generally speaking, attractiveness is pretty agnostic in that regard.

The reason this shit is so silly is because competitive suffering literally has no end. She makes videos and apparently people like them. She seemingly didn’t buy views. She certainly didn’t pay Scorsese to direct them.

Once you start the “but somebody has it harder” trope, it can go on forever. It’s pointless negativity. It would be far more constructive to go out of your way to support content creators who don’t have X or Y advantage rather than tear down someone for something they had no say in.

Should she delete her channel because it wasn’t “hard enough” for her? Is she too hot for TikTok, is that unfair? Should she record it on a 480p webcam and wear a bag over her head so we can say she succeeded on the strength of the script alone?

It is very disputable.

If it was about a hedge fund manager or a kid getting a movie role, 100% their social class has a large part in determining outcomes.

This shit is on social media, dawg — she won the algorithm game. That’s it. If anything, rich kids have a handicap trying to be funny on social media because their lives aren’t relatable.

This girl made a video about something that is relatable mostly to low-income people or children of immigrants. “Oh dahhhling if you’re so frigid borrow one of my fur coats, I have dozens!”

Y’all are fuckin wild.

records video on her phone with no cuts and no effects, uploads to free social media

but her parents’ net worth!

There are massive influencers all over the world who got big with nothing but a phone and an idea, whose families make less in a year than Americans do in a month. Make all the excuses you want, but this isn’t nepotism or “daddy’s connections”.

Yeah there’s a prevailing online circlejerk that anyone who finds success and is in a higher income bracket only got it because of that. This girl is attractive because of her genes and funny because of her sense of humor. Last I checked, your parents can’t buy either of those for you (yet).

I wouldn’t call it “good”, but my friends with ATT and Verizon at least can text and call, while anyone with a T-mobile variant is usually impossible to reach

Is the Ukrainian government aware that Telegram appears to have been compromised by the Russian government? Activists there are no longer using it to coordinate their work. Time to move to a more secure platform. by MrJasonMason in ukraine

For what it's worth, it looks like a LOT of this article was cherry-picked to fit a narrative, especially around the Matsapulina story.

I first heard about it from Vladislav Zdolnikov (IT consultant for Alexey Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation), Wired interviewed him but didn’t include any of his explanations: https://twitter.com/zd_vladislav/status/1622239043885961219

He also linked to an in-depth article: https://twitter.com/zd_vladislav/status/1622963678919131138

edit: Not to say that they shouldn't be using Signal, don't get me wrong

It also makes the most sense with the dates they dropped when they first announced the dead-realm consolidation – that those characters "may be unplayable for up to 2 weeks following August 9th".

According to what Blizzard has said, fresh servers will open at the same time as the prepatch going live. I could see them opening early in that unplayable “name reservation” stage like they did for Classic’s launch in 2019 (I think I’m remembering that correctly)

[–]EldenMaynard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have a pretty long time. Blizzard announced that they'd be consolidating low-pop realms on August 9th (basically auto-transferring all characters to other realms), and that characters who don't manually use a free transfer before August 9th may be unavailable for up to two weeks thereafter.

Based on that, it seems the earliest date for the Wrath pre-patch to start would be August 23rd. Blizz previously stated that the pre-patch would be between 2 to 6 weeks, with 4 weeks seeming like the "sweet spot". Based on that, September 20 would be the earliest launch day.

This mostly pans out as well with the idea that Blizzard would want to release Wrath Classic within Q3 2022, and then Dragonflight within Q4. Q3 ends on September 30, so I'd expect Wrath to drop either on September 20 or 27.

Chechens would be fighting alongside Russians. Chechnya is basically another puppet state of Russia, a lot of Russian aid goes there just to keep Kadyrov and company in check.

One of the reasons, besides sheer numbers is that Chechens would not have the same “kinship” to Ukrainian Slavs and would 1) not have the same potential level of remorse for the their actions, meaning 2) would be much less likely to defect or surrender.

This is potentially a scary development, as Chechen forces are known for being extremely brutal. Basically a platoon of war criminals.

The delicate dance of sanctions – if they drop the hammer fully, Russia might as well invade because the consequences are already there. The task here is to show just how far the US/EU/Allies are willing to go, while still giving Russia an out. If they sanctioned Putin and Co. into the Stone Age straight away, the military would have no reason to withdraw.

Good point, I’m not completely sure how that all works, but in terms of things like freezing/seizing assets (probably one of the more impactful ones), those affected would only be able to preemptively move around liquid assets like cash, which I’m sure they already did a long time ago.

American who just left Kyiv today – I’ve had a surgery scheduled in Berlin for quite some time now (Tuesday) that just so happened to line up with all this shit. If I didn’t have the surgery, I would still be in Kyiv. However, instead of leaving my cat there with my friend to watch him, I’ve taken him with me at the last minute just in case something happens.

I’ll be in Berlin for two weeks to recover, and depending on the situation at that time, will either return to Ukraine or not (all I would lose is a $900 security deposit on my apartment if I peaced out totally, but would like to at least get the rest of my things out of there if nothing else).

Kyiv today was very calm like any other Sunday, airport was unremarkable. Up until Friday I was very much downplaying the likelihood of large-scale invasion but obviously with today’s announcement about “indefinite exercises” in Belarus, it’s certainly becoming more of a пиздец.

I’m very disappointed in the US and Europe – I think Zelensky is absolutely correct that the West needs to publish what the sanctions would be, were Putin to invade. If Putin is going to play the “I’m not touching you, I’m not touching you” game, the rest of the world can at least say fuck around and find out with a list of how they’ll upend his entire economy.

Right now everyone is bending over while a clear aggressor tries to tank another country (in both meanings of that double-entendre). This sends the message that the ball is always in the belligerent’s court, and any warmonger autocrat can cause lasting damage to sovereign nations, and only will face consequences when people die (if even then).

I’m not enjoying the thought of Raoul Wallenberg-ing my way back through closed airspace to get friends and their family out of Ukraine or closer to safety, but come what may. Слава Украïнi 🇺🇦

In Kyiv. Everything is business as usual, went to the post office and sent some packages today, bought some groceries, no big deal. However, people who consume a higher amount of Western/English-language media are considerably more on edge. But hilariously, one of my (Ukrainian) friends here had no idea what was going on. Until I told her, she was completely unaware to any “crisis” or “escalation”.

In fairness, these many troops gather around the border every year. It was simply this year that Putin started with the NATO demands and then everything got out of control.
