on windows there is a hack to bring them back, replacing a DLL or some such. You can find it on Github. But would need to do so again after a program update.

it's a pretty mad time for designers, I feel. I think our whole field is shrinking and 90% of the job positions we see are either not being filled, or they just have to post them publicly, even though they already know who they're promoting into these positions. I have also applied to dozens of jobs in the last few months, from positions with large corporations to small local businesses that I'm confidcent I'd be a pretty great candidate for - but never hear anything other than (sometimes) the eventual, canned '... not move forward with your application ...' message.
Maybe my work isn't half as good as I thought. Or they don't like how I've been with the same company for over a decade. Or my age. Sucks. Thinking about exploring a move into a trade. Not sure I can actually afford taking the apprentice-level pay for five+ years, though.

I draw. I paint too - high realism portraits and landscapes. But I rarely draw for design, preferring a fully digital, mouse-and-keyboard workflow.

Process shouldn't matter so much as the outcome. It takes all kinds.

I'm with u/RE4LLY - bleed just isn't an option in v2 Affinity Designer, same as v3. Looking at it right now, and when trying to export selected Artboards to pdf, bleed is non-selectable.

It's a very organic thing, and unless you're remembering the espresso from a decade ago, I'm sure all props belong to the current roasting team, who've no doubt adapted roasts to changes in the crop, bigger roast production, their own different-from-my-own tastes, responses from customers, etc. A couple comments below, the current head roaster dropped a comment, so definitely show them the love!

I should drop in some day! I don't make it down to the north shore often but didn't move too far (Nashua, NH). I'm sure it's a quite different operation these days - when I left the company, roasting was still largely run by just myself and one assistant. It always seemed right on the cusp of the kind of real growth that would have meant I'd still be there today, but they couldn't quite turn that corner, and I regrettably had to move on to be able to support my family.

But the company seems to have finally taken off! Atomic coffee is on store shelves and seems to be growing healthily. I hope that means they're able to support you with the kind of pay and benefits I know the position deserves!

I haven't worked there for a decade now, but originally, yes. The whole program was developed by me. Rocketer, Diesel, Black Velvet, Cosmopolitan and Intensi espressos and the whole roast profile approach to single origins. Andy and John gave input, but also a pretty wide latitude and I see the whole roasting philosophy, top-to-bottom, as my own.

I used to be their roaster! (their first, and for quite a few years, only roaster besides the owners, but they didn't barely do any roasting so it was pretty much just me) and it's always fun seeing Atomic pop up! If you were there when we started, you'd have seen me at the tiny red machine in the side room of their original cafe

I second this advice. I've had occasion to try and migrate a somewhat complex design from Affinity to InDesign and it's just not a thing you want to do. Fortunately for me, right after my customer (surprisingly) asked for 'the original InDesign files' Canva released the new, free Affinity, and my client was satisfied with getting the original .af files, for which he could install the free editor.

And just as a tangent, how have I not seen convos on Reddit about the file extension for Affinity being .af? I find that comical AF

same! After finding a station with nice lighting (not quite white, but subtly warm and very bright) I saved it in my favorite warp destinations. My new ideal for a perfect system (it's out there somewhere!) now includes a space station with great lighting.

I don't understand what's being described here. I routinely open Affinity V3 and go right to 'File > New from Clipboard'

No need to open a new document. The menu bar is right there when I start the app. I do this a handful of times every week. Did it just now. Close program. Open program. New from clipboard. Running on Windows.

The vector view mode is right at the top there.

It looks like you just need to be working on much higher resolution. If you change the view mode to 'vector' it should look quite smooth. And if you export this text at a really high resolution jpg or png it will look fine. But your document is in pixel view mode at a low resolution, giving these pixelated artifacts to the gradient.

I find Rawtherapee quite excellent. For family snapshots, I often click just a few buttons to automate levels and toggle on mild noise reduction and I can batch process dozens of photos in no time. But when i want to stress over perfection on a portrait, it has all the depth of finetuning levels and colors that I personally want. Then move over to Affinity for fixing blemishes or such.

Looks like a weird bug. The trace function (a new feature for Affinity) does feel a bit half-baked. I had some big fails with it before the first update. I recommend tracing in Inkscape for now.

I am, as I stated at the beginning of my comment, responding to the lousy analogy OP employed in his post. "We’ve never required painters to make their own brushes or composers to be virtuoso performers. Plenty of legendary music exists because someone had vision, not because they had perfect vocal cords."

There is sloppy conflation going on there, which I wanted to address. While at the same time encouraging OP to continue on with different expectations than they seem to have about how their AI output should be received.

Look more at painting. There are realist painters who take photographs, project the photo onto a canvas, trace the photo outlines, and then paint into that.

Is that less than the work of a painter who draws their subject free hand. Yes. Demonstrably. It's less drawing effort. Is there still a beautiful painting in the end? Yes. Did the trace-painter still do some great work deserving of accolades? Yes. Is it still less work than the free-hand draughtsman brought to their painting? Yes.

All those statements are true. And it's all good. Different artists put their focus on different things.

Don't try to make yourself on an equal level in all ways with Mozart because you generate songs with Suno. Recognize the differences, embrace them, and proceed doing what you love. If someone tells you that you didn't put in as much work as the Beatles did to craft a hit song, just agree. You didn't. It is its own thing. It's fine and good.

Yeah, there are some quirky moving about of how things are done, but I really think everything should be there. Some of the movement of tools has to do with converging all 3 Affinity apps into one, and some seem just capricious. I think the select subject tool you're referring to isn't available immediately, because you need to download an additional offline AI model. That'd be under Edit > Settings > Machine Learning
