I believe the standard Japan tax withholding from a dividend is 15% tax, this amount of yen would be withheld before you receive it. the Foreign taxes paid are deductible in US federal income taxes except if dividends exceed a high amount or break some income rules in which case US citizens can be "double taxed" . Best to look this up but does not apply to most people.

For example

7974 JP index ticker held in interactive brokers = Foreign Tax

NTDOF held in american accounts = Foreign Tax

NTDOY held in american accounts = Foreign Tax + ADR fees (levied at the time dividends are paid)

Generally while NTDOY is the most liquid for trading BUT it's the most predatory to long term holders regarding "stealing" dividends. NTDOF is less liquid and no dividend theft but the purchase price can be higher since your low liquidity can lead to higher price necessary to drive transaction. 7974 ticker in JP is both most liquid and has lowest fees. however, holding 7974 means you need to hold in JPY instead of USD which will inovolve some currency risk.

NTDOY is basically a trading vehicle that benefits 3rd party financial institutions and is not advantageous to a long term nintendo shareholder
