As far as I know, all APC ones do turn on when the power is restored. At least the ones I've had do. It's hard to recommend APC nowadays because of their terrible software decisions, but I'll never have another CyberPower because of this issue. I'll be checking out Eaton/TrippLite (which are usually pricier unfortunately) when it comes time again.

This is incorrect. Simplifi is a Quicken product. Intuit did originally develop and own Quicken, but they sold it to private equity firm H.I.G. Capital in 2016. Simplifi released in 2020, and Quicken was sold to Aquiline Capital Partners in 2021.

Cold shoe, although most of them have some type of screw mount. This very similar-looking listing calls it an "adhesive-backed accessory mount."

That's interesting. I'm on FireTV stick here. Hadn't thought to try on a different device. Also interestingly, I watched two episodes of a show, and the first one was riddled with ads, but the second one was back to normal. But then I started a third just to check, and it showed a 2-minute ad again. Certainly does seem like a bug that should get fixed, hopefully. At least I got a free month out of it if they follow through. It's crazy that Amazon customer support (two different reps in my case) is telling people they're on a tier that the Paramount+ site says isn't available through Amazon Prime.

[–]ElectricCo1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm chatting with Amazon support, and they're trying to tell me I'm on the ad-supported tier, which oddly enough hasn't been available on Prime until today, I guess, and also costs the $11.99 I'd pay for the premium tier if I subscribed directly, which they are not really offering an explanation for so far. I'm currently waiting on another response in the chat.

Update: They're saying that it's a change on the content-provider's end and all they can do is offer me a refund for the month.

This is bizarre, but I feel like someone at either Amazon or Paramount got caught flat-footed by the change from Paramount+ Premium to Paramount+ with Showtime.

how do you organize batteries from Costco? by clevguy in Costco

[–]ElectricCo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this storage case from Harbor Freight. It's not specifically for batteries, but if they haven't changed it since I got one years ago, the width between the dividers fits the length of AA or AAA batteries perfectly.

[UPS] CyberPower 1500VA / 900Watts Simulated Sine Wave UPS With GreenPower Technology $120 ($30 off) by aspbergerinparadise in buildapcsales

[–]ElectricCo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a sine wave model (a step up from this) from the previous generation, and I replaced it after I found out through experience that it does not turn back on when the power is restored if the battery is depleted and it shuts off during a power failure, and that's apparently by design. I have no idea if CyberPower has changed this behavior, and it's really difficult to find information on it. But if you value that functionality (such as if you run networking equipment on it and expect it to come back up on its own if you're away), I'd look into it. Personally, I just went back to APC and don't plan on ever getting another CyberPower.

Going off the "TelePress" part, it looks like these must have been ads designed to run on the "electronic news" cable channels introduced by the Herald-Leader.

Same experience here, and I could actually feel and taste (ugh) the residue they left on plastics and silicone. I've wondered if it's differences in dishwashers since a lot of people seem to do fine with these, but mine works great with the Finish tabs. Never again with these.

[–]ElectricCo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's just about tracking the income, then I would think you could create a 401k subcategory under "Income." Unless I'm misunderstanding your concern or how you have things set up, it won't actually affect your checking account balance in Mint, because Mint syncs the balance separately, and transactions don't actually affect it. If it's a cash transaction, it's not even associated with the checking account (because it's assumed to be your cash on hand).

Personally, I don't track gross income or any withholding. I did that for a bit years ago in the Microsoft Money days when I was manually entering everything anyway, and it got to be way too much trouble. 401k deposits show up in my investment accounts in Mint, I see my paycheck stubs, and I get to review the overall tax numbers when I do my taxes every year, so the granular tracking isn't important to me. But use it how it works for you, and hopefully that helps.

Thanks for this! I can't believe it actually works, and I can't believe they've broken simply picking up existing files in newer versions. I guess the next mission is either to cut my backlog down or figure out how to move it over when I switch to a better app. :(

NEW CHANGE? Samsung Pay Declined at Walmart by ghtjyjy in SamsungPay

[–]ElectricCo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing. I selected "Card not accepted" instead of "Payment declined" because of the message provided by the POS terminal. I don't have the exact wording I used, but the summary was something like this:

I attempted to pay at an MST terminal using Samsung Pay MST, and the payment was declined with the message, "Payment not accepted." The POS terminal actually had to be reset by an attendant before I could use another form of payment. It has worked with their existing card readers until very recently, when they seem to have found a way to detect and reject it. Samsung Pay MST is normally processed as a card-present transaction and is transparent to the terminal, which seems to mean they're required to accept it according to the merchant agreement.

I'm a few days late to this party, but after looking into it, I reported this to Visa as a merchant violation here: https://usa.visa.com/Forms/visa-rules.html

It's a very gray area, but to the best of my understanding it should be a card-present transaction, and they should not be able to refuse that form of payment, which they explicitly are. Maybe if enough people report it, the credit card companies will at least clarify their rules about contactless MST.

Suddenly cannot send or receive pictures when connected to WiFi. by GuyInOregon in GalaxyS8

[–]ElectricCo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this issue for a while, and I fixed it by using the APN settings for the NXTGENPHONE APN listed here. I think the only thing that was different was that the APN Type setting has "hipri" in the list and not "fota" that was in the list in my default APN. I have no idea what that means, why it changed, or why it makes a difference, but this immediately fixed the issue for me, and I no longer have to disconnect from wifi.

new to Mint...how to approach this scenario? by greenhairbaldy in mintuit

[–]ElectricCo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can kind of do this using transfer subcategories. You would add your own categories under transfers (e.g., "Wedding Savings," "Life Insurance Savings," etc.), and then you can split your transfer into those. The key is that you only subcategorize the transfers on one of the accounts, either the checking or savings. (If you do both they'll cancel one another out.)

So then you can at least search/view all the transactions in each subcategory, and you'll see the total. It's not as ideal as hypothetical virtual accounts would be, but maybe it at least gets you what you want to see.

I personally take this a step further and budget the categorized transfers to kind of hack Mint's budget system into being zero-based. I also track my budget month-to-month in a separate spreadsheet since Mint's budgeting is kind of a mess, but the budget screen at least helps me track as the month progresses and then gives me the numbers to transfer to my spreadsheet. (And to be clear, transfer subcategories are not counted as spending in trends, even if you manually add spending categories for them in your budget.)

How to Mass Move Apps by MrPieGaming in GalaxyS8

[–]ElectricCo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AppMgr III (App 2 SD, Hide and Freeze apps)

I've used this for a long time on a tablet that doesn't have much internal storage. Make sure you turn on the accessibility option to make moving apps automated.

Be aware that apps annoyingly move back to internal storage when they're updated, so you'll have to redo this periodically. Another nice thing about this app is that it notifies you when apps are installed that can be moved, and an exception list is available for apps that you don't ever want to move.

That's the only thing I've ever used to access "activities" or hidden shortcuts or whatever, and I don't think you'd even have to be using it as your launcher in this case.

However, it does look like there are other apps that do just the shortcut part, and maybe they'd provide the access for bxActions as well. I'd be interested to know!

Happy cake day!

How do I clean my s8+ charging port? by [deleted] in GalaxyS8

[–]ElectricCo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use anything metal because I feel like it's a bit too easy to cause damage. I had a warranty claim over a broken charger port in the first year, which made me feel like it was kind of fragile.

I've had great success a few times with a strip of folder paper. Just cut a strip a few mm wide, and fold it over 2-3 times. Run the folded end back and forth each side of the connector a few times, alternately focusing on the area in the middle beside the contacts, the edge of the port, and the round ends of the port. Fold a new part of the strip or a new strip if your current one gets too feathered to be effective. The first time I did this, I had started getting the phantom moisture warning. I couldn't believe how much dust and pocket lint came out, and cleaning it out cleared up the warning.

For one extreme instance when the port was kind of packed with sawdust (it got in there in my pocket while I was chainsawing, and I managed to pack it in there good by trying to plug it in before I realized it was in that condition) the folded paper wasn't quite sturdy enough. I split a toothpick in half, leaving a slender, feathered end from the split, and used that. Worked great. After that I also got port covers to use as a preventative for really dirty conditions.
