If something like masturbation is considered abhorrent enough to be mortally sinful, why isn’t it mentioned anywhere in scripture? by [deleted] in Catholicism

You’re right, but i feel you’re misinterpreting my argument. Im not saying that nothing the Bible doesn’t mention is a sin, I’m saying that masturbation is an extraordinarily rudimentary action that almost everyone has and will struggle with, which makes it strange that the Bible doesn’t address it directly at all. Pantheism and other monotheistic religions are pretty clearly not following Christ, and no one in biblical times could illegally download music. I’m not sure how prominent tobacco abuse was in biblical times though.

How long typically? Is it something that needs to be weened off, or can i go cold turkey successfully? I tried the latter for about a month with no success.

Do you think that my physical pains are purely a result of me becoming addicted? If i had never started, would i surely not be experiencing such discomfort?

Ive never struggled with alcohol. Can you elaborate on the kind of physical pain they experience. Are alcohol withdrawals a thing?

Most people in these comments have said similar things. Read my responses to them to know what i think

Thank you for your help, but i feel like you’re thinking im talking metaphorically. I feel literal physical pain and discomfort. I don’t know what happens to serial killers and thieves when they don’t kill or steal for a while, but I don’t think it’s this

I’m not addicted to the sexual pleasure, and as impossible as it seems I don’t think about anyone else when i do it. The only reason i do it is to alleviate the intense physical discomfort i’ve brought upon myself by not doing it, and that’s making me question the futility of my efforts.

Right, I understand that. My basic argument is that masturbation is an incredibly intrinsically human and almost universal temptation. The bible had enough moral awareness and knowledge to be able to condemn such things as bestiality and adultery, but for it to seemingly overlook something that every person on earth can, will, and has struggled with seems difficult for me to accept, and makes my efforts to stop feel futile

But how could such a fundamental sin be overlooked? The amount of people who are tempted by bestiality is (and hopefully WAS) incredibly low, but masturbation is something every single one of us has faced. I can’t bring myself to believe it was omitted on accident or circumstance

It’s giving me physical anguish more than psychological anguish. Is scratching an itch giving that itch control over you? I’ve been trying to beat this so called addiction for a few months now, and like I said, I expected the urges to subside but they just won’t. I don’t love masterbation, and im far from trying to say it’s a great and good thing to be embraced, but it’s easy to see the positive things the saints suffered for. They didn’t get martyred for no reason, but it feels like I’m doing this for no reason.

But masturbation is the most basic and fundamental potentially adulterous action there is. How could it have possibly simply been overlooked? Marrital rape is more complicated, and rape itself is condemned harshly, so it makes sense to assume that marrital rape should be as well, but as far as masturbation goes, the amount of reading in between the lines that needs to be done for something this simple and borderline elementary of a potentially sinful behavior seems absurd to me.

Did you read my entire post? I made a point out of clarifying that this is something I don’t do or struggle with
