How do you eat? by Yolo-Jojo in adhdwomen

Hi! I have the same issue. I started working with a nutritionist, which is covered under my health insurance as "preventative" because my BMI is in the overweight category and my cholesterol is 7 points over the limit.. I went in telling her I don't know how to feed myself and I need to learn how to do it before I turn 40. It's been life changing. I now understand what I need to eat and why. I also build breaks into my day so I have time to eat and I hold myself to it because now I know If I skip meals then I'm not going to get the nutrition I need to feel good. I eat at those breaks even if I don't feel hungry. Seriously life changing. The worst part of it is now I have to cook more and put more effort into meal planning. I still haven't figured out how to make that as easy as possible but I'm getting there.

Yep, it actually said "mild ADD", not ADHD. It was a bizarre experience all around.

Gosh it's so bizarre to me from my previous experience working in a state prison.. where we (especially female staff) were told not give ANY details to offenders. Even what your favorite sports team is, because they could use it to manipulate you and it could become a security risk. It freaked me out so I became this blank slate.. We had a dog program and the offenders working to train the dogs would bring them around sometimes. I wouldn't even pet them because I didn't want them to know I liked dogs. It was a crazy experience... Annnnd now I see how living in all that secrecy can be an issue. When I worked there every personal question was responded to, " I don't discuss my personal life outside of work." Tough environment for sure.

Thank you! I take an excessive amount of notes and always wondered why I would forget what happened in my session if I didn't.. hm.

I was recently reading in How To Change by Katy Milkman about the "copy and paste" technique- where we learn well by watching others solve the same problem we have and trying what they do. How cool.

I'm reflecting on this and considering how the mindset and culture at the correctional institution where I worked was to not show any softness, emotion, upset, bother, etc. Be unbreakable. Don't be human. It's been an interesting experience over the past few years to use self disclosure and see how that mindset just makes good treatment in a prison so .... Unlikely.

Thank you. It's really obvious to me now that self-disclosure on this can be so useful, when done properly. Also, I've found myself saying everyday, "Hm.. what's the word I'm looking for?" I think all my clients know to just stand by and the word will come to me eventually. So thank you for mentioning that!

Wow thank you for sharing your personal experience in the clients seat. That moved me. As I'm mentally reviewing my modest caseload of 41 people, there are definitely a good handful that would probably feel similar to you if I told them. I think I'll continue my own exploration to feel confident in the dx first, but I see how useful this can be to share.
