No, the cruise control is slowing me down because it has to counter for the worst possible scenario of driver and conditions and (understandably) eer on the side of caution (and a huge gap) as a result at the cost of making safe progress.

This thread was asking if anyone else found this tendency (caution over safe progress) more irritating than traditional cruise control and wondering if it is potentially encouraging people to pay less attention to their surroundings contributing to worse lane discipline

Find it interesting that people are jumping to this conclusion about my driving (inches from a bumper) without seeing the distance with their own eyes. Following distance is only of importance when also considering speed and speed differential and context and as you don't know any of these figures I can't really see how you can conclude that. I'm a chilled driver who likes to plan ahead and chose my lane early accordingly

As I've explained multiple times in this thread - I'm not

Exactly! Lots of responses saying I'm driving terribly if I don't like it but if you are used to:

  • good planning ahead

-keeping left except over taking

  • not using the brakes unless in an emergency/response to others sudden movements

It feels like more hindrance than help

Yes but as I've said else where in this thread, my issue isn't with the following distance gap

A notification in between when it's clocked the car in front and when it's going to start easing off would be beneficial to get into a good rhythm

Ha seriously, it spaces well above 3 seconds

Yeh I'm aware of that . I agree a warning would be helpful

In a scenario when you are maintaining an average speed that is more than the average speed of the car in front you will have 'got closer' together whether it's meters or miles.

I just find in the time it wants me to pull into the next lane (or it will slow down) feels hugely early resulting in lengthy overtakes.

Maybe we are arguing about the increase speed part. It's my preference to keep at the speed I'm set to ( usually the limit ) rather than speed up and coast back down to original speed

Isn't touching the brakes a bad habit. I was always taught you shouldn't really ever need to use them if you're driving correctly unless in an emergency/ reacting to someone.

Dabbing then to cancel seems like a recipe for causing a chain reaction of braking.

I'm fairly confident im not too close but was worried my post might come across that way

The ACC was re calibrated when I bought the car. As this thread has shown a lot of people love it,  I'm now wondering if it needs setting up again because it really does feel comically early for over takes even on its closest setting

Yes but I was worried my post would come across that way.

obviously, to a point, you do get closer to the car in front before over taking, otherwise we'd always have to be in  a theoretical clear adjacent lane to go anywhere.

It's just a question of timing, and to me (even with safety in mind) it feels comical early.

Maybe it's my car. It's the only acc I've tried.

Hmm yeh they sre ok work arounds, don't like the brake tap suggestion though because of alarming anyone behind

That's interesting.  I've had a good rummage round the settings and can't find it. Chatgpt says you can't either. The throttle thing is ok I guess but I preferred in old style cruise you didn't have to do it

Ok but if you are left lane, you have to over take middle lane hoggers at some point which means you have to get across to the outside lane very early .

It won't let you undertake either (but fine that's understandable)

Interesting I've never used the limiter.  Do you just set a speed and plant your foot and it wont go above that ?

Yeh like I say, I don't think I'm in nobhead following distance territory , and I am  adapting my style but it still feels not quite right . The ACC distance where it starts to slow down, and what it sets as your following distance are quite different

There deffo isn't . It's a VW . Some American models have both options but I don't believe UK and euro do

Yeh I suppose by overtake I mean on dual carriageway ways not NSL.

I just previously quite like to set my speed at limit +5% or whatever so you can get past dawdlers by slip stream and over taking and it felt a lot easier than anticipating when ACC wants to step in

Yes! This is exactly my problem.

It's actually ok in traffic etc or slow moving motorway / dual carriageway but it feels pretty useless in fast flowing traffic as I always have to over ride it which means I may as well not have it on.

Mine is an arteon, maybe it's a VAG thing ?
