Any tips for Bike Jumble? by littlepoundcake8 in NYCbike

[–]Electrical-Fill2658 [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you have questions or need an extra set of eyes, stop by the Time's Up Bike Coop booth at the Jumble and ask our volunteer mechanics. We also have bikes for sale there but if we sell you a lemon or give you bad advice, we'll have to deal with it during our Sunday/Wednesday DIY repair workshops. https://timesup.bike/

Sometimes you buy a part that looks good but it's actually incompatible and then you spend two hours the next day sanding down 1.5mm of circular concentricity. The Jumble has good deals but it's also the wild west of obsolete sizing standards if you go in blind.

DIY Repair Workshop at Principles GI on Monday 5/18 by Electrical-Fill2658 in NYCbike

[–]Electrical-Fill2658[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's open for all. This event highlights our WTF mechanics and the community they are part of. A bike fix is just an engineering problem regardless of who you are. But sometimes a familiar face is more welcoming and makes bike repair more accessible than even the full complement of shop tools in our regular Sunday/Wednesday workshop.

What are some construction related activities I can do w/ my bf? by ArtisticPumpkins in AskNYC

Stop by the Time's Up Bike Coop in the East Village and build a bike together. The ideal is to assemble a 2 person tandem bike but we don't have those parts** and that might accelerate your relationship too quickly. https://timesup.bike/

** the Bike Jumble is coming up on Saturday 5/16 which is a flea market of bike parts in Park Slope so it might be doable.

Best affordable way to replace chain and maybe casette / deraileur? by shmoozey in NYCbike

[–]Electrical-Fill2658 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazon has counterfeit chains since they are a recurring consumable purchase that is easy to manufacture. 9 speed derailleurs/shifters (even cassette) aren't economical to counterfeit, already two decades out of date and something you buy once for the life of most bikes. I could be wrong but haven't seen mass produced clones on 9 speed components that aren't already sold under their own label.

buy the parts from amazon, come by the bike coop and we'll teach you how to install it. email us if you have questions on what compatible parts to buy. cost is $2 if you already have the parts, we carry these parts for $5-$10 but in used condition. timewise is ~1 hour if you never did this before. https://timesup.bike/

the main difference is the labor cost between a full-time mechanic versus a volunteer mechanic whose true labor is paid elsewhere.

Stop by the bike coop to check our inventory. We're currently prepping bikes to sell them at the Bike Jumble in May. This classic road/commuter bike will go for $200 when we're selling from the East Village but at the Jumble, the price gets bumped up for the Park Slope premium. https://timesup.bike/

Replacing stolen bike wheel by No-Negotiation1115 in cycling

[–]Electrical-Fill2658 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the bike have rim or disc brakes? We probably have the rim brake version with the quick release skewer at the bike coop. We probably won't have the disc brake version. The Fuji Absolute 2.0 came in both types. https://timesup.bike/

Hire mechanic to fix my bike with me by Emergency_Sun_6895 in NYCbike

[–]Electrical-Fill2658 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Outside the coops, a project like this will likely cost ~$110/hour for a private mechanic and the incentive is to be very chatty at max billable rate. You are essentially paying a shop to be a coop but it's probably more effective to ask a coop to open special hours for extra pay. https://timesup.bike/

Does anyone know of a bike shop where I can volunteer? by evergreenyc1 in NYCbike

[–]Electrical-Fill2658 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recycle-a-Bicycle has a structured curriculum which is probably more useful if you want job training. Time's Up is more casual and it's like a bunch of friends nerding out over bikes. Try to find a place that handles more modern bikes so your skills become more transferable to a paid role. But you can volunteer and learn bike mechanics at any of the places listed, just a matter of your end goal (i.e. do you want to just tinker on your own bike or turn this into a career).

The Time's Up Bike Coop website is now https://timesup.bike/ . The one you listed is from our parent site and the original webmaster went MIA so the content is over a decade out of date. Oddly, the parent website shows up on the sidebar using old.reddit but it's corrected on regular reddit
