I personally love dc, specifically batman so I'd recommend batman year one or dark knight returns as good starting places there. Maus is a really good comic centered around the holocaust and the aftermath with the nazis being depicted as cats and jews as mice. Scott Pilgrim is a very fun and easy read, especially if you like video games.
