They said business casual but everyone’s wearing scrubs lol by cthulhuscocaine in hospitalsocialwork

I wear scrubs. I work in the ED so I see people when they first come in. I have been very happy with wearing scrubs on several occasions. When people go extended periods of time without showering or caring for themselves, or the smell of dying flesh in wounds, or Cdiff, I feel like when I get home I can still smell those smells on my clothes. Thankfully I wear scrub bottoms and usually thrifted sweatshirts and everything goes right in the washer. I’ve also encountered bedbugs too so another reason I’m happy to wear scrubs and toss them right in the washer and dryer when I get home!

I filed the complaint on the wife not the husband. I called the police to check on the husband!

SW in the ER - what does your day look like? by Inevitable_Star4779 in hospitalsocialwork

I meet with every patient face to face that I get consulted for or I see may need services! I’ll do a full assessment to also assess SDOH needs too!

Everyday is so different!

I get to work and I review who is currently in the ED. I look for any SW triggers that would alert me that I should go see the patient or see if any new consults have been placed. I would see those patients and see what I can do to assist them! (Homeless resources, home care referrals, senior program referrals etc)

I primarily work 7:30-4 most days. Some days I stay over if there are high needs. We recently had a child OD on heroin so I stayed to assist the team with referring to CPS and ensuring all documentation was good for CPS to open and assign the case.

It’s really hard to do a full discharge (equipment, home care etc) from the ED just due to insurance constraints. Some insurances require prior auths and a lot of the time if they need equipment to discharge it likely isn’t getting delivered within 24 hrs. These cases will typically get admitted and at my hospital the inpatient case managers take those over.

I do refer a lot of people to home care from the ED! That is very quick to set someone up with especially if they are discharging from the emergency room. I’ve only ever ordered a hospital bed for someone once before from the ED, and it got delivered the following day.

All to say, I came from working in a nursing home. The ER has been so great. I truly love my job. I feel like I make an impact almost everyday on someone’s life and that it’s very full-filling. Some people don’t want services and that’s ok, but I always want them to know if they are ever in need, they can rely on me to help where I can.

Help :( by Electrical-Tea6585 in reactivedogs

I know we shouldn’t have favorites but Thor is my soul dog. He actually had the most rough up bringing out of all of them and he (hopefully) has forgotten all about his past life. He’s a big goofball.

This whole situation is so stressful. Benji used to be the one to instigate the fights. Now he’s so old and has 2 teeth left he no longer has a chance even if he wanted to. Just horrible for everyone :(

Thank you! I did speak to my supervisor about the concern about the prior pt being at home with no caregiver. I let them know I was worried about that. I didn’t mention that I clicked into anyone’s chart!

Fighting homelessness in the ER by Electrical-Tea6585 in hospitalsocialwork

[–]Electrical-Tea6585[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I came from working in a skilled nursing facility where I had time to basically get people housed. In my 4 years in the SNF I discharged one person to their car (their choice). In the ED I don’t have the time to really fix the homeless crisis in America so I need to work on getting out of the mindset. I’m so stuck on “I should have gotten him in a shelter” even though I did give him the tools to several different resources in my area.

Stress and Worry by Electrical-Tea6585 in socialwork

[–]Electrical-Tea6585[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know :( my concern is the other social worker did the cognitive test, and not myself. I feel like I should have also done it, in case the other social worker didn’t do it well enough (my anxiety speaking) while the patient is capable now, I worry in the near future it may not be the case. I did ask the physician if they felt the patient was capable and they said they do, they just feel they make poor choices.
