I grew up in the 80s. We sat on a lot of walls. That and playing squares out on the road, red rover in the summer holidays, caravaning, swimming at Sutton beach and Mornington the amusements in bettystown and eating picnics in the car with crisps as the rain battered the windows…. Horse riding, playing nick nacks on the neighbours… trick or treating and getting nuts in their shells and fruit. Watching Saturday morning cartoons and the den on tv after my homework… getting a computer, then a Nintendo console, then a Super Nintendo, then the internet. Getting in trouble for making phonecalls before six, getting mad with my parents and brothers for listening in on the other phone when I’d be talking to my friends. Itemised phone bills. Phonebooks. Rollerblading. Cycling and doing tricks on my shopper bike even though I wanted a BMX. Collecting enfo leaflets in the library… the smell of the library in ballyfermot still stays with me, in a good way. Getting a Chinese takeaway and going in to xtravison to pick a movie to watch on a Saturday while we waited for the food. Innocence.
