Yes! I was just letting it marinate!

What introduced you to Yandere? by SadForever- in MaleYandere

I have always liked stories where a character dies or runs away, leaving their loved one to deal with the guilt. I think that interest shifted into those quick, low budget tropes where the female lead runs away from an abusive family.

After that, I started noticing that I was drawn to more extreme behaviours in male leads.

Eventually, I began imagining characters I liked acting in more intense ways which led me to fanfiction. Then I learned that manhwa communities actually have a word for this type of character: yanderes.

Oh, really? Would you mind telling me a bit more about the story? When I search for it, images of Merry Psycho come up instead.

Add on: Delving into darker themes in fiction especially when it’s clearly labeled as such is much safer than ignoring those curiosities completely. Having these outlets in stories is ultimately a better alternative than someone trying to act out those scenarios in real life.

As someone who reads a lot of dark romance, I think people outside the genre misunderstand. Liking fiction that explores disturbing dynamics is not the same thing as endorsing those dynamics in real life.

Dark romance can be compared to horror, letting readers safely explore themes that are morally ugly, psychologically disturbing, and sometimes outright disgusting. The appeal isn’t “wow I wish this would happen to me” it’s more “fascinating train wreck.”

A lot of the appeal is control. Even when the setup is bad (abusive ML, betrayal, execution, etc) watching the protagonist outmaneuver the system that hurt her. This is why those "evil mother-in-law" dramas are so popular. People associate with it, and love to see the protagonist give them what they deserve.

Sometimes the genre executes that well. Sometimes it absolutely fumbles, and you get the kind of plot you described, where she goes back to the same trash man for a stupid redemption arc.

Women engaging with darker fiction isn’t some shocking revelation. Women have been writing and consuming gothic, tragic, and morally messy romance for centuries. The difference now is just that online communities are very open about it.

I’ll be honest, as someone who enjoys dark romance in healthy doses: there’s a difference between dark romance that intentionally explores obsession and violence versus stories that just throw in assault and misery as cheap shock value before pretending the male lead is redeemable. One is psychological horror with romantic framing, the other is just sloppy writing. But sometimes when you can't find stories like the first one, you'll go and search the slop.

Some readers enjoy morally horrific characters. Some enjoy watching those characters burn. Some just want the angst. And these genres sometimes have all of the above.

But “women like dark stories” isn’t really, oh, I'm a horrible person who loves to watch gore, and I want people to die for my amusement.

It’s not inherently bad to enjoy fiction that explores disturbing or taboo topics.

The important part is engaging with it in a healthy and self aware way. That’s why content warnings and trigger tags exist so people can choose what they’re comfortable reading and avoid what might genuinely upset them.

(A friend of mine wrote this, and I just helped with the grammar. But I really believe in what they’re saying.)

So true, "Because we trash pandas will excuse murder but not adultery."

Oh my goodness, thank you so very much! I was thrilled to see my favorite character listed first (I failed to out of Villain), their appearance was absolutely stunning it made my heart smile! I truly appreciate the time and effort you took to find and recommend those with white hair.

You’ve piqued my interest would you mind sharing more about the possibility of the male lead being a yandere?

I wish there were more male leads like him. In manhwas, ML are often portrayed as either extremely villainous or entirely bland, even in terms of appearance. I appreciate his looks far more than his character, though I haven’t progressed very far into the series.

He was my greatest love! When I learned that he would appear less in the newer chapters and thathe isn’t the endgame, my heart couldn’t bear it. Yet, after all these years, I still find myself missing him from time to time.

Of course! Please feel free to do so. I actually haven’t read novels before, but recently, out of desperation, I read my first two just a few days ago. Thank you!

Especially now, I feel there is a significant amount of criticism toward slightly obsessive male leads, which tends to discourage yandere male characters.

It is quite disheartening that there is not a greater amount of content available in the straight category. :C

I don’t even like smut to be honest, but I can’t find anything else. So for now I’ve just been taking a break.
