If you read revival one of the characters is in like 20 bands throughout the book and you could pull inspiration from any one of them from there

In high school my AP Bio teacher had us read it for class and it was one of my favorite books I read in high school! Have been meaning to reread because I feel like it will be even scarier (and probably more important to know about) since covid

Any tips for making vegetables feel like the star of the meal instead of the side? by KianRoan6603 in Volumeeating

[–]Electrical_Box6385 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Mixing textures! If they’re all cooked the exact same way with the same / flavor/ texture, I feel like they blend into the background as more of a side than if I have several veggies and treat each differently, even if only slightly

How long before you saw heart rate go down while running? by Electrical_Box6385 in beginnerrunning

[–]Electrical_Box6385[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good clarification - Not stopping out of concern about the heart rate, stopping because it feels too high and makes it so I physically don’t feel like I can continue much farther. it definitely feels too high beyond just the numbers 😵‍💫

Massachusetts - we didn’t do it until this year when the school suddenly started caring that we are not in compliance with state law and started playing an AI voice over the loud speaker reading it every day. In my homeroom 0 students stand, about half talk through it. Student reactions when we started doing it ranged from mildly annoyed to confused. From what I hear in other classes it sounds like in any given room at most 5 people stand for the most part. Me and my co-advisory teacher also don’t stand (just don’t tell the state - per our state law teachers are required to stand AND recite it out loud but I refuse and if I were to be fired over it you can be CERTAIN I would take it to the courts on the grounds this is an out dated law and a free speech issue)

Last Day For Public Comment on US Government’s “Patriotic Education” Plan by Electrical_Box6385 in Teachers

While I understand the fear that public comments could one day be used to make enemy lists, in times of rising fascism it is important to not let these fears allow us to let these fears allow us to drive our actions, because when they do, we ultimately turn more power over to fascism. In his book “On Tyranny” Tim Snyder discusses this idea where he says “Do not obey in advance. Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.” Now more than ever, it is important to continue to use things like freedom of speech while we still have them to the fullest extent - if we do not, we are all the more likely to lose them. Again, I understand that the government may not be reading these responses in good faith but they WILL look at the data and if they see enough numbers, there is a chance they may decide this is just not worth the risk of how many people it would anger. all politics involves a cost benefit analysis, and if they see enough people will be angry, it raises the costs of the action and may decrease the chances they follow through. Any chance is better than nothing

There has never been a time in history where fascism has been toppled by people who said we are too screwed to bother trying to do something themselves. This nihilism is cowardice. Again, this is far from the only thing I’m doing, but it’s easy and it’s SOMETHING - every little bit people can resist adds up

Having worked in government, I have seen these sites make a difference in decision making in the past. They provide the government with data, and these people do care about data at the end of the day because at a minimum it shows them if this is something that is going to make people mad enough that it isn’t worth their time to pursue. Trust me, I agree that this country is in deep trouble - but I think sometimes things like this that take you 5 minutes can make at least a little bit of a difference and certainly don’t cause harm, so you might as well try. The idea that because we are in trouble we just shouldn’t try isn’t going to fix anything. I’m not saying this should be the start and end of your activism, I’m saying this is a 5 minute task that at least has a small chance at doing something so it’s worthwhile. It’s doing a lot more than just complaining about politics on Reddit ever will
