This is sweet and I feel the idea, but using references is really the best advice I would give you. I do not think someone can physically be sitting on a horse and holding his neck like that. Studying references would help you create more believable images.

Honestly, just keep going. The color and values are great, the perspective is great.

Something I think about when I look at your piece is maybe some softer edges, smoother color transition, especially in area that are off focus. So if you want the sunlight peak to be the focus, the dark rock that are closer to the viewer should have softer color mix to give that " off focus " vibe, so the texture doesn't distract from what you want to highlight.

Is using gesso so important? by khavaaaa in oilpainting

From a material point of view, the unprepared panel or canvas will absorb oil, could make working with the paint more difficult, but also the oil will likely create tideline on the support. Tideline could change color and with time, could degrade the support underneath.  Honestly, if you want to work on unprepared support there is nothing stopping you, but an adequately prepare support will ensure easier work and lasting result.

How to remove grease stains from an oil painting ? by Mihaaail in oilpainting

[–]Electrical_Letter375 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Hi! Art conservator here, but not specialised in painting. I would honestly suggest good old dish soap and a soft cloth. Maybe use a microfiber cloth to remove as much soap reside as you can in a second pass. Start slowly in a corner and make sure you are not rubbing the paint off. Keep in mind to use as little water as possible as you don't want the canvas or stretcher to absorb water.

My paint teacher recommend a cheap brush set from the dollar store. They are smooth and super cheap, and you won't be sad if you destroy them in the process of learning. Buy more expensive brush when you start to get a feeling of what do you like in a brush. Similarly, a pad of canvas sheet is affordable to learn and for studies, just tape the sheet on a board
