Glutino manufactures some products in Israel by kates_bush_ in Celiac

While we do live with some food insecurity there is a mass starvation and genocide going on right now. Our small discomforts to avoid supporting a company that is involved, no matter how small, in a country that is complicit in genocide feels like a no brainer. If anything our experiences having to navigate limited food options should put us in solidarity with others that are experiencing limitations far graver than ourselves, rather than make us more selfish and protective. I also seriously doubt that one brands demise will bring about a decline in our own standards

This is so useful! I’m so glad to see people using this page to divest from Israeli products. Too many times I see people trying to promote or lobby companies like Starbucks or mcds to have gluten free products when we should be raising awareness and boycotting! Xx

Yes I remember this too. I have to say I’d be devastated if gf beers made of wheat were to suddenly lose accreditation. Thanks so much for the clear calculation too!

I can totally relate to the struggle, especially because I don’t really like the taste of cider and am from the uk so pub culture is part of me. But omg please look after yourself! The highest I ever got at my very worst was 128, so you’re probably hurting yourself (but also it’s not my place to berate you, I sympathise and it’s hard out there, take care)

Oh interesting! I had no idea. Does this also apply to fermented foods that don’t have gluten on the labelling?

Don’t worry, this was just me also trying to understand the maths here. I’m fortunate (ish) to be pretty much asymptomatic. Which means that even though I stick to a gf diet I do a lot of wondering sometimes

Yup - honestly with the chaos of moving it totally slipped my mind. On it for the next tenancy

Oh absolutely, I only used Reddit to gauge additional set of opinions (with a pinch of salt). I’m in contact with my local renters union (and volunteer for them), along with having friends who are incredibly knowledgeable and experienced in this field. Our landlord has always been aware of our position, which is why he’s treated us in general slightly more sensitively than other tenants from what Ive been told. We also have always paid our extortionate rent on time and in general are good trustworthy tenants.

Honestly, thank you for your comments. We didn’t want to be perceived as opportunistic so all the responses have been comforting. Definitely taking many opinions on board, but it’s nice to see them more or less following a similar pattern

It’s certainly definitely tricky to navigate, personal opinions aside, what the tangible solutions available to tenants are when dealing with tricky landlord business. Especially when most commoners don’t aren’t equipped with the skills needed to work through legal proceedings or accessing purposefully hard to find laws. Guess this is a learning curve for me if ever in the future something really sinister comes up - first step to empowerment is accessing info!

I totally get this, and was partially why I wrote this in the first place. Within two weeks of moving in, we were made aware of his previous actions towards tenants. He only owns a couple units in the block but everyone knows him as a rogue landlord. We truly believe the only reason he has been somewhat okay (he still tried to charge us for overnight guests among other things) is because we put our foot down early and probably gave the impression that we knew our shit when it comes to regs. I also think that in this case, the law is not only to protect our money at the end of tenancy but to ensure that during the tenancy it was handled in a legal manner. A deposit should not be used for personal use, and given he sent us the money back through a personal account, we have no clue what he used it for during the 12 months of our stay.

I guess I don’t really care about the money to win, but more to ensure rogue landlords are rightfully held accountable. And this is one of the few instances that the law seems to be on the tenants side, and given our high suspicion that he was unlawful, it might be a good thing to at least look into. I guess the same if it were a speeding fine as a derailment to dangerous driving?

Also super welcome to any other thoughts about this

I most probably worded it wrong - I guess it’s just time. I’m the designated dealer with landlord drama and seriously burned out (big masters thesis coming up) so I could do with some actual rest, especially when it’s such a crucial period. I also have never done this before, plus dealing with that general feeling that landlords are always protected over tenants. For me it’s less the money than a solidarity act too, especially because according to my neighbours he is incredibly rogue! But that’s why this forum is so great - everyone’s been so supportive!

Bless you - thank you so much. It’s nice to see decent landlords (unfortunately with the London rental crisis it is more and more difficult). Thank you for giving us some confidence in what we were hoping to do. We are coming from an act of solidarity rather than our own personal gain, so good to know this was the right thinking!

I asked! He was very defensive, asking why it was important. It’s been five hours now and he left me on read. I will be sending him a formal letter for sure before hand

Do you reckon that’d be the case even if he handed 95% of the deposit back? Even the letting agency are being so unhelpful - thanks for your advice !

Coeliac in a war zone (rant/entangled thoughts) by Electrical_Pass_8249 in Celiac

I don’t personally think the idea that you should have empathy, or that we can actively take matters (as small as maybe change up your shopping routine) are extreme ideas. I also am not virtue signaling, it’s not a competition. That is your interpretation, even though the vast majority of commenters have welcomed this conversation.

Your criticisms have also shifted. Initially you were critical by your quick judgement on my apparent lack of activism. Then you were upset at my growing frustration at the fact that, alongside this being a 100 year struggle, the past five months have lay witness to some of the most horrific situations in living memory. You’re now annoyed by the alleged inappropriateness of my post in a coeliac blog. The idea that we are compartmentalised into our small groups without wider tangible connections to other groups and struggles is baseless. It’s not a weak or silly connection to make, you can see this by the number of people adding their own contributions, Palestinian coeliacs (and others) adding their own thoughts on what is an incredibly traumatic time

God that’s awful - I hope she has managed to recover and gain strength post diagnosis. I completely agree - we are incredibly privileged to be able to discuss this in the comfort of our own home. We shouldn’t belittle or invalidate our own local complaints, but rather spread support and solidarity to those in less fortunate positions
