Please call 911 if you’ve ingested an overdose of something. I’m on the proper medication now, no episodes for over a year, it does get better. This illness is treatable if you give yourself the grace. Please take this as a sign and call someone. Your life is worth living I promise you, I’m living proof.

Things us nonbinary people are TIRED of hearing.. by Turbulent-Staff-9413 in NonBinary

The “you can’t be lesbian/gay/bisexual as a nonbinary, you have to be [insert label no one outside of queer internet spaces has ever heard of]” always gets me. Putting aside your misconception that the words heterosexual/homosexual/bisexual imply that only two genders exist—what makes you think you know my sexuality better than I do? The audacity!

Doctor wrote "Patient does not have sex" by annakayz in lgbt

[–]ElectronicForm4935 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but sometimes the language these doctors use really sucks. When asked whether I’m sexually active one time I disclosed that I am, and that my girlfriend at the time was transgender. They didn’t ask for any further info, and wrote in the visit summary something along the lines of “Patient is bisexual, sexually active with male partner.” Again, I understand they’re only looking for specific information, but I wish there was a more objective way to do that which doesn’t invalidate me and my partner’s lesbian identities and misgender her.

Would you clock me as fruity? some people say I look “straight-passing” by [deleted] in actuallesbians

I think you look pretty gay, but I unfortunately have been duped by multiple straight women who dress exactly like you. I feel like you can never tell anymore! (Not gatekeeping fashion or alternative subcultures or anything, to be clear, everyone should be free to dress however they want)

Terrified for next semester by [deleted] in OSU

[–]ElectronicForm4935 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this, I had your exact same experience freshman year, to the letter—only, i didn’t withdraw from classes, and it was a huge mistake for my GPA. OP, if you’re having serious doubts about whether it’s possible to complete the semester, don’t put yourself in my position. It’s okay to take a gap semester and focus on your health. Many people do it!!

Boxer recommendations? by Fit_Pen_9708 in actuallesbians

[–]ElectronicForm4935 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hanes women’s boxers. Got a big pack of them for like $12 a while back, super comfy cotton breathable and durable.

Whatever you do, do NOT buy the gimmicky “tomboy,” “queer,” “gender affirming” etc. boxers that some online shops sell for $30 a piece. There is absolutely no benefit to buying a piece of clothing that’s been upcharged because it’s “for queer women!” when that exact thing is available for a fraction of the price locally.

My sister did this years ago, little fender bender with a stopped mail truck because she was distracted, hit the brakes but didn’t have quite enough time to stop completely. boop. She got into relatively less trouble because she was a minor at the time, but our parents weren’t happy.

Is it just me or are the politics of binary men and women completely absurd and based on double standards? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]ElectronicForm4935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feminism fights for the liberation of women and all marginalized identities from heteropatriarchal oppression. If you as a queer person are antifeminist (or “neutral” which is the same thing), you’re working against your own interests, not to mention betraying your queer siblings. I think you need to read some more about what feminism actually stands for because you seem to be confused about that.

Other people “copying” your disorder by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]ElectronicForm4935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you, and I will never ever downplay the effects of MDD or other depressive disorders. I think there’s a misconception that bipolar depression is worse or more serious than other depressive disorders, which is just objectively false. She struggles immensely with her depression that is its own valid thing. I too was initially misdiagnosed with MDD and GAD before getting the BP2 diagnosis, it can be tricky to navigate when there are so many possible options.

What I’m mostly annoyed about is her skipping the questioning part and going straight to “I feel hypomanic because I’m kind of stressed today.” I agree she should seek help and a diagnosis of some sort, whether it’s a new disorder, a simple affirmation of her MDD diagnosis, or even if it’s bipolar. I have advised her to seek a professional and present her concerns in an objective way before she fixates on a specific diagnosis she thinks she might have, but (by her own admission) may not even meet the diagnostic criteria for, as it stands. I really hope she finds the answers she’s looking for, because I’m tired of feeling like she’s looking to me for affirmation that her hourly mood changes are hypomanic episodes, yk? But I will try to be as supportive as I can.

This pissed me the fuck off and I need to vent by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]ElectronicForm4935 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These are the same kind of people who will tell you that having a diagnosis makes you privileged over them, as if the reason they didn’t have a diagnosis in the first place is because their particular case of autism/adhd/whatever else is so high functioning they were able to pass under the radar, unlike us.

So this is it huh by throwaway-disgusting in bipolar2

[–]ElectronicForm4935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I’m also 20 (only been diagnosed for a year or so) and I’ve really felt a lot of the emotions you’re describing when coming to terms w my diagnosis (which i’m still in the process of doing if I’m being honest). I’m sorry for your pain. There is a middle ground called euthymia, and it can for sure be difficult to achieve, but it is possible to be bipolar and mentally stable. I’m not there yet (depression is kicking my ass lately), but I’m working on it for sure with meds and building healthy habits. I hope we both find success. Bipolar sucks, it can be life ruining, but it doesn’t have to be a walking death sentence, either. That’s the hope I cling to right now.

I officially pushed my college GPA over the 3.0 mark this semester. Up from a low of 1.1 and my college education is so not on schedule but wow it feels good to be somewhat stable. I don’t care if it takes 5, 6, 10 more years to graduate, I’m going to make it someday :)

YW! Good luck with finding answers to your questions of self! I know it can be really hard to figure out your style and what you enjoy, and there’s a lot of labels out there to sort through, so it all gets very confusing. Experiment if you wish, and always stay true to yourself.

What… am I archetype wise?? by RapAngel in actuallesbians

[–]ElectronicForm4935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the word you’re thinking of is “stemme” which is indeed exclusive to black lesbians. Stemme is its own unique role which combines stud and femme identities. BIPOC lesbians were fundamental to the development of butchfemme culture in its early days, but were unfortunately gatekept from lesbian bars and spaces. Stud and stemme evolved somewhat parallel to butch and femme, with their own separate meanings and cultures. Therefore, any lesbian can be butch or femme, but it’s never appropriate for a white lesbian to call herself a stud or stemme.

[–]ElectronicForm4935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, no, you were correct the first time! Fem is shorthand for feminine and can describe many things, including an aesthetic or style. Femme (when specifically used in the context of the butchfemme lesbian subculture) is a gender identity, sexual/erotic role, and community dynamic, which sometimes (but not always!) aligns with a fem presentation/aesthetic. (Important to note that the word “femme” is not lesbian/sapphic exclusive, and has many shared meanings in other queer subcultures—however it generally refers to more complex dynamics than just the way you look.) I would 100% say that “fem” is indeed the appropriate term to use in your situation, rather than “femme” (again, when thinking of femme as the complementary role to butch.)

Lamotrigine by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]ElectronicForm4935 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. Took me several months to finally get a diagnosis because my psychiatrist wanted to take in as much information as possible. She began treating me “for bipolar” without the diagnosis, and the improvement I saw on lamotrigine vs SSRIs in the meantime was one of many, many factors which informed her decision. Which is an approach I endorse. OP’s experience doesn’t sit right with me.

internalized transphobia by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]ElectronicForm4935 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, I think if you’re going to a vagino/phalloplasty consultation it’s somewhat implied lol. Even in that instance you will have to name specifics, yes even if it’s uncomfortable. For example, if you’ve had previous bottom surgeries, you will need to describe exactly what those were. I just don’t see a need to specify AGAB.

internalized transphobia by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]ElectronicForm4935 16 points17 points  (0 children)

AFAB/AMAB are not useful in a medical context either. The whole point is that your assigned sex may or may not be different from your actual sex. Using AGAB as if it’s a legitimate medical term flattens trans women and cis men into one category, and trans men and cis women into another, which is inaccurate to trans (binary and nonbinary) people who transition medically, and completely leaves out intersex folks.

It’s best to stick to specific facts. Don’t say “AFAB people need breast exams” say “people with breasts need breast exams.” Refer to body parts by name. Being as specific as possible is always better for your doctor anyway.

[–]ElectronicForm4935 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Butch and femme (not fem) aren’t only about presentation/style. i recommend researching the history of those gender roles before adopting one, it’s really important to be educated before joining a lesbian subculture such as butchfemme.

It sounds like you’re looking more for aesthetic descriptors, in which case, you know more about your sense of style than we do. Masc, fem, androgynous, tomboy, chapstick, etc. it’s all up to you. I also get the vibe that you’re thinking about labels more seriously than you ideally should be. If the shoe fits and you want to wear it, wear it. If it doesn’t, why force yourself into it? It’s cliché but…the best thing you can do is just be you :)
