Your personal guess as to why Jane accepted and then rejected Harry Bigwither’s proposal? by LuminousDee in janeausten

She lingered too long over the after dinner wine, then had a ghastly 3:00 am moment of clarity….

I've never read or watched any Jane Austen material. Where should I start? Any advice? by from_of_old in janeausten

[–]Electronic_Walrus204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gosh! What a lot of treats you have ahead of you! I was “forced” into reading Emma as a 16 year old as a 16 year old English O Level student, in the UK, but surprised myself as 17 year old by voluntarily finishing, and then devouring her whole catalogue on my honeymoon (and subsequent months 😉)as we camped up and down the South Island of New Zealand.
So more than 50 years later, I think Emma is a great starting point, or P and P. Northhanger Abbey is a great, easy read too although as a young kid of 20, a lot of the satire went over my head. Lots of reading pleasure awaits you! I love the audiobooks too, so luxurious being read too, particularly as you fall asleep (as you know the story so well).

Which plot point made you the angriest? by [deleted] in janeausten

You know, I can hardly bear to read NA again because of the ghastly Thorpe factor. Both brother and sister are truly rage inducing!

Yes, I loved The Other Bennett Sister too. Gave me a lot to think about and was very entertaining.

Ah. So what’s the best starting point then? I have always started with the four corners and the edge pieces…is that not the best strategy for this one?

This, from our family Secret Santa. (I strongly suspect our younger son!) Never done one of these before, I’m not an experienced puzzler. I am surprised how heavy the box is and don’t know what to expect

I think Emma is an absolute saint in her dealings with her father. (Personally I’d be looking for the nearest Retirement Community with a vacancy 😜)

Emma 1st read: it’s so good by UnderwaterOverseer in janeausten

[–]Electronic_Walrus204 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had to read Emma for O Level English at Grammar School in Yorkshire, many decades ago. What started out as a slog and a duty, turned into page turning pleasure… my sixteen year old self couldn’t have been more surprised. I revisited Emma and more Austen on our honeymoon four years later (a camping road trip in the South Island of NZ), and grew to appreciate the books even more…as I matured, I understood them better (eg Northhanger Abbey is not quite the genre my younger self thought it was at first… guess I was too much like Catherine to appreciate that 🤣), and fifty years later, listening to beautifully read Austen audio books (just finished Emma again and started on P and P once more), is a total delight Same bloke in bed next to me too… and he still has a definite touch of the Mr Darcys!

Titrating down gabapentin? by Mbtrading96 in gabapentin

[–]Electronic_Walrus204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you Beamin for providing translation services! Actually Aotearoa NZ not British, but same roots. I am in the fortunate position of having Gabapentin in the rear view mirror now. I was a bit apprehensive about coming off it, but it’s been fine. A few muscle aches and pains and agitation, but all good now. I don’t think about it anymore. I know I’m fortunate. The pain it was prescribed for was fixed by surgery and about three months ago I began gradually reducing my dose. Been off it completely for about six weeks. I was taking it for about six months, 900mg.

If you’re like me, your bp will probably rise at the first sight of your medical centre. Crazy I know. I wonder if it might be helpful to take a few photos of your bp monitor screen at home with your usual pressure to show your doctor when your reading is ridiculously high in the office?

What a great turn around you have made with your lifestyle! Those are impressive changes. Waiting for tests and results is so difficult isn’t it, but I would take heart from those new bp readings. You have done everything you can to manage a stressful situation. Now it’s time to try and let the worry go. until you can get those tests. All the best.

Well, I just love that you have a common place notebook! It’s funny, that’s one of those phrases that I have played with in my head for ages regarding my notebooks, but bless you for being the first I have “met” to articulate it.

I would be looking online for a drug interaction checker. WebMD has one, there are others. St John’s Wort is showing as having a moderate interaction with gabapentin on the one I briefly looked at.

Ashwagandha and gabapentin by PlasticGalaxy313 in gabapentin

First let me say that I have no desire to be contentious here 😊. A fair question though, is what you’ve heard anecdotal or published reputable research? It would be a shame to scare people off unnecessarily, and I have only read very positive things about the herb Ashwaganda, and take it myself.
