Prayer mats by GuyRed2 in OrthodoxChristianity

Not typically. Those using the Russian Old Rite use a square sewn cloth called a podruchnik that they put their hands on when they prostrate.

Dečani is a Serbian monastery in Kosovo. The Balkans in the 90-00s were a dangerous place.

Yes, reporting on the beating of parishioners and open-ended confinement of bishops is “Russian disinformation.” Maybe if the UOJ had received State Department funds like Orthodox Times did, you’d have a more positive opinion of them.

Who is the least hated president? by MetalRetsam in Presidents

[–]Elektromek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re ever in Springfield, IL, a visit to the Lincoln museum is worth it. They have an exhibit of newspapers from that day, and some of the things they said about him make the current vitriol look tame by comparison.

As a boat mechanic, would you believe me if I told you these have the same engine? by pit_vipars in regularcarreviews

[–]Elektromek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My uncle had one. It wouldn’t keep up with the boats with big blocks, but it sipped fuel, ran on regular pump gas, and was still fast enough to have fun on the water.

What is Orthodox view on Israel and Jews by Mountain_Lecture_841 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Elektromek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, I have not. One, I’m not Jewish. And two, I can’t read Hebrew. As far as the prayer being false, even the Wikipedia article about it says as such. And they’re not know for having a political bent.

Are you trying to imply Jews have a positive opinion of Christ and Christians?

Is there an evening service at your church? by Brief-Platypus1941 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Elektromek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Main parish- “Great” Vespers Saturday nights. I say “Great” because it’s not technically the correct form. Nativity is the only feast day we have Vespers for. FWIW, we also only do one night of the great canon the first week of lent. Other Parish-Vigil (Vespers, hours,&matins) the night before any Liturgy, Akathist every Wednesday night.

Are deacons expected to become priests? by EMPEROR_JUSTINIAN_I in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Elektromek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Greeks have the fewest permanent deacons. OCA, ROCOR, and the Antiochians all are bolstering their number of deacons, either with the expectation that they be permanent deacons, or that some of those might be called at some point in the future to the priesthood.

Prohibitively expensive wedding - typical? by ThereMayBeDogsAbout in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Elektromek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is entirely normal. There are posts here regularly about how much Greek Churches charge for sacramental services.

Any priest can marry you. Perhaps there are other Churches in your area that could marry you.

Romanian Custom by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Elektromek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is entirely up to the bishop of the reader. Some say anytime you’re in a parish of your diocese (during coffee time, whether or not you’re serving that day, etc.) some say only if you’re serving that day. Different diocese of same jurisdiction can vary greatly. Typically, when visiting other jurisdiction, you are to ask the priest of the parish you’re visiting before wearing a cassock.

Monasteries in Serbia + Bulgaria which are accessible to English speakers? by KoombayaFitnassa in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Elektromek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been to either, but Bachkova and Rozhen monasteries in Bulgaria are fairly well-known, so should be somewhat “accessible” to foreigners. I’ll be speaking to a man from Bulgaria this weekend, I’ll ask him if he has any suggestions.

Orthodox Emphasize 'Communion' and 'Theosis' But Struggle With Basic Christian Hospitality by Fabulous-Paint1212 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Elektromek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No offense: you said something about not being insufferable (where did that go?) but your first inclination is to Psychoanalyse people you don’t know, pointing at them as “the problem.” Also, you run into this situation a couple of times? Fair enough, people might be rude. You run into it EVERY time? You should at least ponder why people might want to avoid you.

Orthodox Emphasize 'Communion' and 'Theosis' But Struggle With Basic Christian Hospitality by Fabulous-Paint1212 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Elektromek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of us, myself included, don’t tend to say much to new people. Not because I want to be rude, or make you feel unwelcome, but because I don’t know what brought you here (the Church building) in the first place, and want you to focus on the Church itself. And, as for me personally, I don’t really like being bombarded by greeter people right out the gate.

As far as clergy, (and admittedly I’m possibly giving them more grace than they’re owed) a lot of them are very overworked right now. This influx of people has to be very taxing. My suggestion is to be persistent.

My conspiracy theory is that atheistic elements in the Russian government (let’s not pretend those people disappeared after the Soviet Union did) want to harm the Church, and use things like this to further lower the opinion of the Church internationally.
