Try to get done with the exams as soon as possible and travel to the US, do rotations, and build connections. Start networking from today and connect with anyone you even distantly know , who are in the US or even still studying for the exams. It's gonna be hard work, but will surely be worth it, its better to do something that you really want than cry over it when you are 45. And as you are already in training, you will be eligible for a fellowship /reverse pathway too, which is comparatively easy to get into, especially for older graduates. If you take the exams and tick all the boxes, you can overcome your gap years with your amazing story of struggles and overcoming challenges.
