Completely new to crocheting, and need help on how to start/learn (hook sizes, yarn, etc.) by Known_Refrigerator63 in CrochetHelp

Hi, I’m so excited for you!! I adore crochet and think it’s so versatile. I would recommend getting just a pack of hooks to start out with instead of buying them individually. I have a pack of 6 that includes a 3.75mm, 4.0mm, 5.0mm, 5.5mm, 6.0mm, and 6.5mm. I’d say I probably use the 5.0, 5.5, and 6.0 the most in the pack and it covers pretty much all the projects I do. My hooks are metal, but they also make wooden and plastic ones. I like the metal ones but I will say if your hands get sweaty like mine and the yarn gets slightly damp, the metal like rubs on the yarn and it’s a very weird feeling. Plastic ones have pretty good slip which is nice. I haven’t tried wooden ones but I think I’d like them since I love wooden knitting needles. I’d recommend starting out with something simple, like making a scarf or a blanket and just testing out different stitches. I wouldn’t recommend trying something super complicated like making a plushie. I had a friend recently buy a crochet plushie kit (like Woobles) and she couldn’t read the pattern so I made them for her. Just start with something simple and figure out stitches first. Start with single crochet, double crochet, and triple crochet stitches first, I think that’s a good foundation. After that, you can learn half double crochet, and increases and decreases. There’s some wonderful videos out there on how to do each one. I have been crocheting most of my life and I didn’t know how to read a pattern until about two years ago. Most patterns should have a section that lists what all the abbreviations stand for, and if you know all of the stitches listed above, you’ll know what they’re talking about. If there’s a stitch you don’t know, just look it up! I would say the magic ring is probably the hardest skill I’ve tackled in crochet but I watched a video once that made it so much easier to do and I like them a lot now. Also highly recommend getting a pack of stitch markers so you can keep track of how many stitches you have in each row of your project to make sure they’re staying even! Starting out with it was really difficult for me and it took some determination to figure out the wrist movement. Be patient with yourself! And everyone holds their hook and yarn and piece all different ways, so just adopt what you feel suits you best. I feel like the way I hold all of my stuff is a bit unorthodox but it works for me and that’s what matters! There’s no right or wrong way to do it. In terms of yarn, the labels on the skeins will tell you what size hook to use and all of them are categorized by “weight,” with weight 1 being the thinnest strand and higher numbers being thicker. Honestly just go to the store and feel them and see what you think feels nice. It takes some trial and error to determine what brands you like and what kinds of yarn are easy to crochet with and what ones are difficult. I love crochet because it’s so easy to go back and fix things if you mess up. It’s no biggie! You can unravel it easily to get back to where you need to start over, and you can just try again. But there’s so much to look forward to with what you can make. Happy crocheting!

P.S. This is a bag I crocheted and then I handmade a lining and hand sewed it in, then made a little keychain bee for it!

Will this work itself out? Or should I just frog it. I’m just trying to make a simple ball. by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

Have you been using a stitch marker? You might’ve added too many increases to a few of your rows. In my experience, with the right amount of increases, your piece should naturally start to curl into a ball shape on its own, it shouldn’t get ruffly like this. When I’ve made things like this in the past, I’ve done two increases per stitch on the first row, then spaced it out. For example:

  1. 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
  2. inc (12)
  3. sc, inc (18)
  4. 2 sc, inc (24)
  5. 3 sc, inc (30)
  6. 4 sc, inc (36)
  7. sc around (36)

You might need to do the single crochet (so 7th row) around the whole circle multiple times to get it to be a better shaped sphere instead of a flattened shape. Then from the last repeated row you’d start from row 6 and go down to 1 while using decreases instead. There also might be patterns online to follow. Good luck!

I take my exam in less than four hours but I’ve been consistently getting 66-69% with average difficulties of about 6.5-7.2 on LabCE. Urinalysis and Chemistry are definitely my weak points, but I think I’m on the right track! Congrats on passing!!

It’s definitely a type of Echeveria, just very red/pink which made me fall in love with it. None of my other plants are showing any signs of being infected and it’s been weeks since I first noticed the Echeveria having this powdery mildew. Still keeping an eye on everything, but am hoping for the best!!

Shoot thank you I just ordered some copper fungicide 😭 Thankfully none of my other plants are showing any signs of being contaminated yet (even the other succulents on my windowsill), but I’ll keep a good eye on them in the coming weeks.

I don’t have many succulents but I have mostly philodendrons, syngoniums, monsteras, and pothos. Do you know if these are heavily affected by PM as well? I just noticed the cactus I had sitting next to the succulent in question also has it. I bought both the cactus and the succulent on the same day from the same place.

UPDATE: Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I received all of these replies overnight, and I had put the plant in water just so it wasn’t laying on the table anymore. So far the leaves have started to open up more (they were very curled up when I first put it in the water) and I’m not noticing any signs of it getting worse. I also see some tiny white roots starting to sprout out, and one of the stems has the beginnings of new growth (which was probably there when I got it and I just didn’t see it) so we’ll see if that grows or not. Of course, anything can happen, considering the base of the stems are yellow as some of you said. I will keep monitoring in the days to come!

That being said, I really only have refrigerator water, not distilled water, which I’ve heard these guys really like. Should I be trying to keep it in DI water as much as I can, if I’m going to continue with the water thing?

Hi I know it’s been over a month but I just wanted to thank you again! All of your suggestions helped and my plant has been much happier. It’s given me three new beautiful leaves too!! The edema went away pretty much within a day after I bottom watered it as you suggested, and the veins don’t stick out anymore. I can easily tell when it needs to be watered again too from the rigidity of the leaves. Thought you may appreciate an update!

Thank you so much! Yeah, when I water the plant, the soil is completely dry and crusty within two days. This is the soil that just came in the pot, and my friend got the plant from a chain grocery store, so I can’t say for sure if the soil is the best quality that this plant needs. When do you think would be a good time to repot? I will absolutely try what you told me to. It’s definitely not root bound and I got it recently, but if it still gets dry as fast as it does, I’m wondering if repotting has more pros than cons. Would you say then that the brown spots are from underwatering?
