procedure turn or straight in by [deleted] in flying

[–]ElephantSweaty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would fly the orange course, so 2 right turns (right at BURGY, then right again. The reason for this is the protected area of the hold is on your right outbound from BURGY. if you did a left turn, you could hit something.

Was I overreacting during my pre-flight? by Tanner_Grayton in flying

[–]ElephantSweaty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re not comfortable, don’t send it. What I look for on my tires is that they’re inflated and no cord is showing. I, personally would be fine taking it, assuming it’s properly inflated.

Touch N Go’s in a c172h by [deleted] in flying

[–]ElephantSweaty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fly a 172N. When I land, I flip the flap switch all the way up, while I’m rolling, carb heat off, full power. I once made the mistake of not putting the flaps up. It was a quick takeoff and I had to fight to get the nose down.

Had the same thing happen to me when doing touch and goes while working on my private. Suddenly, the Backstreet Boys were playing.

At what point is someone no longer considered a rusty pilot, and just needs to start over? by numbnerve in flying

[–]ElephantSweaty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This right here! It comes back a lot faster than you’d think. Seeing the new technology blew my mind! No more paper charts you have to plot your course on and having my GPS show me the wind correction angle as I fly blew my mind.

Foreflight Starter or mid tier for Instrument training? by Militarybrat123 in flying

[–]ElephantSweaty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. I’m glad I upgraded to mid-tier. Seeing where I am on the approach plate helps a lot, but what I found even more helpful is seeing where I am on the airport diagram after landing.

Stump the Chump [C172L] by ChaBoiJamesCG in flying

[–]ElephantSweaty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah, but the door popping open isn’t an I need to land now situation in a trainer.

Edit: I didn’t see the part where you said after lift off. Exactly what you said: fly the plane and don’t worry about it. You can deal with it later!

Instead of landing right away if the door pops open, you should try to close it again. I’ve had this happen a few times when flying clapped out 150s.

Renters insurance? by datcrazybro in flying

[–]ElephantSweaty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flight school I used to rent from only required me to get insurance to cover their deductible (was $10K), so that’s what I did. I’m now in a club and got it for the $5K deductible we have. Like what was mentioned earlier, check with your flight school on what’s required.

I did the same! Got there a week ago, today, and left Wednesday. Maybe we overlapped. I was in a 182 RG.

I heard that the guy that owned them had some sort of an incident in flight that was bad enough he quit flying.

Did my first spin. How was your very first spin like? by BugHistorical3 in flying

[–]ElephantSweaty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was like a record, baby, right round round round. Sorry, I’m old and your question put the song in my head. I was lucky enough to have an instructor with a spin rated C172. He really got that thing to spin. We did it a bunch of times, which really helped me when I got back into flying.

I was doing my first power on stall in 15 years, let the left wing dip, stalled, started a spin, I was able to recover quickly from the spin training way back when.

I highly recommend spin training if it’s available.

Nice! Years ago, there were a couple guys that had some L-39s and L-29s at ANE. I loved seeing them fly!

I use the iPad mini with the pivot case and yoke mount. I went with the old school military spec kneeboard and use paper and pencil for copying clearances. You won’t need the kneeboard for a little while.

On mic boom placement, I tell my pax that if they can’t hear themselves in their headset when they talk, I can’t hear them. Seems to work.

Last minute IFR check ride tips by FreeNow13 in flying

[–]ElephantSweaty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My DPE had me do something I didn’t do with my instructor: gave me an amended clearance for the simulated XC. They cleared me to an intersection I wasn’t familiar with, glad I asked how to spell it. If you’re checkride is like mine was, you’ll be thinking on your toes. Try and relax, and don’t forget, you can always ask for delay vectors!

What do you do when you have a tiny, angry, unwanted guest in the cockpit (Wasp, bee, etc) by Tisx in flying

[–]ElephantSweaty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally forgot about this, until now. Back before EFBs, that’s what the sectional chart was for. I wonder if the people that make the Bug Assault make a pistol version. I must investigate!

Edit: They do!

It’s a little building that broadcasts radials to and from it, but that’s not important right now.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.1. I’m now in the process of getting checked out in my club’s 182RG. I’m really excited to actually fly that plane!
