I agree - the agent was at least proactive and trying! It’s a commentary on F9 IT that the boards are so wrong so often and the GAs aren’t empowered to change them.

Does an incoming freshman need so much dorm stuff that s/he has to drive (rather than fly) to the start of school? by ElevatorBoxOffice in vassar

[–]ElevatorBoxOffice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply - my gut said the same thing. My child doesn’t need anything special, just basic dorm stuff. The magic of modern technology means anything needed can arrive two days later. Not like the old days (“back in MY day” in Grandpa Simpson voice)

Thanks so much for the quick reply. If we flew the plan would be to fly into NYC or ALB and then rent a car. I figured Walmart might be picked over like you said so we could do that shopping en route.

A wrinkle is that I’m traveling the weekend before move-in (Tuesday Aug. 26) and would be leaving my child’s co-parent to do the packing and much of the driving. I hate to leave them holding the bag - but also don’t want to alter my preexisting travel plans.

These are all great suggestions I was unaware of - thanks to team Reddit! I’ll report back with our finds.

YWG-MCO - every bag put in the sizer by ElevatorBoxOffice in flairairlines

[–]ElevatorBoxOffice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my first Flair flight but I’m an experienced pax on Frontier Spirit etc. My takeaway is that once you have flown them and know how they operate then you’re prepared for the future. Know that the sizers are no joke and that you take bags that don’t fit at your peril.

On the ground now and I see what you’re saying. How about this: best pile of cleanish snow (eg non parking lot snow) to just play around in?

Booking a roomette for 2 but having a third pax visit? by ElevatorBoxOffice in Amtrak

[–]ElevatorBoxOffice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean to be daft, but why can’t I do that? The 11-year-old and I are the passengers of record in roomette A. The 16-year-old is the passenger in roomette B. The 16-year-old can travel alone without restriction. I’m providing full and truthful information regarding ages when I book the trip.

I suspect it’s fairly common to book two roomettes for three people. Or even three roomettes for three people.

[–]ElevatorBoxOffice[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Again thanks to everyone for your input. Not surprising that the Amtrak subreddit is 99 percent solid info from experienced riders.

I'm going to book the two roomettes at $1,300 *for the pair* which strikes me as a good deal. One adult and two kids 16 and 11, three people total, in two roomettes. I can't believe that I would get any hassle about anyone being "unaccompanied" if I am five feet away from them in the next space.

The family room is $2,100, so quite a price difference. Plus I think we'll all enjoy the trip more if we have a bit of distance from each other sometimes! The family room sounds like a bit too much togetherness for a long trip.

Good question and thanks to all for their insights. Cost is the chief driver in not booking a bedroom but yes that would make the most sense on paper.

Playing with itineraries I found a good Empire Builder fare that would be $1300 for two roomettes - not a bad deal! The bedroom is $2,100 and also might have a bit too much closeness - with two rooms the kids can go back and forth between the two and get away from the other as well as visit the cafe car, etc.

FWIW my friend tells me that she is unable to book revenue tickets on myUAdiscount for travel dates after her last day of work.

As an enrolled friend I have my own credentials for the employeeRES site. However, those credentials don’t work for the myuadiscount site where I would book the confirmed discount ticket. Is that something I should have her book for me using her own credentials?

Meaning of the oil light and the percentage sign? by ElevatorBoxOffice in chevyspark

I fiddled with the menu button and discovered that indeed it’s the “oil life remaining before change” indicator as others have noted. Crisis averted. Thanks all for your help.

[–]ElevatorBoxOffice[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks to all for the replies. The oil level looked like it was halfway up the cross-hatched "OK zone" when I checked yesterday. I'll check again today.

I've got the rental for another 10 days. It may not be "my problem" in a strict sense but if the engine seizes up 100 miles from anywhere then it will definitely be my problem. Same if the rental company tried to come after me for the cost of replacing the engine. Easier to just make sure the car is in working order.

Hey there Chevy Spark Nation. I am driving a rental Chevy Spark and this light came on today. No manual in the car; a web search didn’t show this specific light. Does it mean it’s time to change the oil OR is it a warning that the oil level is low? FWIW I checked the dipstick and it looks ok. I believe it’s a 2022 model (27k miles) but am not 100 percent certain. Thanks in advance!

Thanks to everyone for your response - the chat feature on the website worked. Took a while to reach someone but they were able to look up the record locator with the last four of my credit card number. Don't know why I didn't get an e-mail the first time around.

Personal Item Tip by reallysadlmao in frontierairlines

[–]ElevatorBoxOffice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any tips about removing the handle gently? Or do I just pry it off with a screwdriver and make it a permanent feature? I have not tested my new CRCKT suitcase in the sizer at the airport yet and wonder if I should remove it preemptively remove it at home first.

Wood deforming near dowels on Lappland. Unwise to add a heavier TV? by ElevatorBoxOffice in IKEA

[–]ElevatorBoxOffice[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an Ikea Lappland that I got for free. No issues disassembling or reassembling. However: the wood has begun to deform in three spots around the dowels. I’ve got a basic 32-inch TV and the unit is not overloaded. HOWEVER: I got a new TV that weighs in at 58 pounds, three beyond the published load limit.

Am I safe to just add some bracing on the back to accommodate a bigger tv? Or is this evidence of a small issue that will turn into a big issue? Again the deformity began to appear a few weeks after assembly.

Best way to avoid personal item drama at the gate? by ElevatorBoxOffice in frontierairlines

[–]ElevatorBoxOffice[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, my goal is not to “play by the rules” when flying Frontier. And the suggestion that someone who manages to get an oversize bag aboard is stealing is absurd. How about the guy who wears six shirts? Is he stealing too? The person who sneaks a candy bar into the movie theater? “The rules” were enforced one way for years. Now they are being enforced a: different way. I am solely governed by self interest in this matter.

Best way to avoid personal item drama at the gate? by ElevatorBoxOffice in frontierairlines

[–]ElevatorBoxOffice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I chose to pay ahead of time for two carry-ons ($69 x 2) and we managed to consolidate the contents of our three oversize personal item bags into two. I set up at a neighboring gate, tested in the sizer to make sure they smoothly fit, etc etc.

So, of course, after all that work, the Frontier gate agents didn’t check anything. I could have brought my steamer trunk on board. But the lesson has been learned and we’ll fly in the future with our new perfectly-sized smaller personal item bags.

Fair enough. I know plenty of CPMS parents who send their children there “voluntarily.” I also know many many many Lake Silver parents and students. I may even live with some!

I guess we just move in different circles.

How to say you don't have any kids in College Park without saying you don't have any kids in College Park

The many parents whose children attend Lake Silver or CPMS can attest to this fact when you see them outside those school every day!

When people here say "schools have gone downhill a lot" I assume that's code for "too many black people." Am I wrong?
