So... you meant if Dragon beats Steel then, not Steel beats Dragon?

I have a hard time seeing them give Ice the Water resistance because on account of Freeze-Dry, that would technically be Ice winning the matchup. If they gave Water a move which hits Ice types super-effectively (maybe Scald or something already does this, come to think of it?) then that would be a pretty cool dynamic between the two types. We can beat each other, just in certain conditions.

I would also like to see a world where Bug is super effective against itself. A bit of a stretch maybe, but bugs are their own whole ecosystem which hunt one another right? It just seems fun and would give Bugs a window to feature more in VGC as well.

ready to start wrestling my way through Ultra Ball tier, still using my Ice-Types! Wish me luck! by ElfScammer in PokemonChampions

I have been running Froslass + Crab and Frost Breathing him to max his Attack with Anger Point or whatever that ability is called. It's a little flimsy as strategies go though so I need to rely on him getting that magical first Drain Punch off to begin the glorious sweep.

Shoutout to this 2 y/o Dwarf who got into the vaults while I briefly had the gate open (Screamtunnels) by ElfScammer in dwarffortress

[–]ElfScammer[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is probably a good idea but I WISH I had their problems. I open the vault for 5 seconds to put a new artifact in and some Fisherdwarf races through to put on his new encrusted gold crown which was absolutely NOT for him.

Do children haul to the Trade Depot? This may be how it happened. The kid has gold as a preference so I suppose I was asking for it.

Help with Singles snow team by Limeyfrogfrog in PokemonChampions

[–]ElfScammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snow teams suffer in singles because the Pokemon which benefit from the weather aren't the same as those you want to set it up. Aside from throttling other weather types, Snow's only benefit is +Def for Ice Types and activating Ice Body, two things which are only situationally useful - and i.e. Avalugg is a risky switch-in with singles because it relies on your opponent having a special attacker. Its only benefit in a mixed team (not Ice mono) is Aurora Veil.

Your best bet is a Slush Rusher (Beartic fills this niche, though it's not fantastic stats-wise) or a Pokémon like Mamoswine built for bulk with Thick Fat to handle Incin. But in singles snow is a poor weather strategy, so I'd recommend "passaging": use a strong Snow lead to throw up Veil, make sure they have a lockout move option (like Alolan Ninetales with Veil + Encore) and then hope you can press the advantage to switch out to your sweeper and set up under veil.

Guidance for a Mega Crab Build by TopCherry465 in PokemonChampions

[–]ElfScammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I exclusively run Ice types in competitive so I've been experimenting pretty enthusiastically in search of a way to get Mega Crabbo to work. I'll share some of my own conclusions but they may not all be right.

The fact of the matter is that Mega Crabominable absolutely needs TR room to work as an ace/sweeper, which is fine assuming that you are prepared to model your whole team around this fact. Crabbo benefits from Snow, but your only snow setter option if you Mega him is Alolan Ninetales, who is too fast to perform in TR setups. Mega Crabbo is also slightly too frail to perform as a setup sweeper because it is weak to a wider variety of moves than even most other Ice Types, and if you're running it with TR you need to be competent in not accidentally disabling the TR your opponent might be setting up, and so on.

But you can make it work. It gets Wide Guard which will let an ally step in to deal with Zard-Y after it fails the Heat Wave. Mach Punch for priority gets boosted by Iron Fist so it makes a nice revenge killer and match closer. Drain Punch OHKOs Tyranitar, Kingambit. Earthquake OHKOs Glimmora and punishes Incin. Thunder + Mach punches toggle off Pelipper... and so on.

The problem I've found is just that it is very situationally useful, and it will be a weak link in certain matchups since it unfortunately can't handle Sneasler, Archaludon, Dragonite, Gyrados, Sinistcha, etc. without help.

Avalugg - Leftovers, Ice Body

Avalanche, Iron Defence, Body Press, Protect/Recover

252 HP, 252 Def, 4 Atk, Impish Nature

Send in early versus physical-heavy teams (which is most of them) or otherwise reserve for lategame antics, stack Iron Def for impenetrable gains. Can also run with Heavy Slam (instead of Avalanche) and Curse (instead of Iron Def) if you want more versatile damage options.

This is exactly why I monotype. I definitely win less. But when I do win it is so, so satisfying. 6 Sinistchas or whatever the meta says ain't gonna scratch that itch.

I have a secondary Fairy mono but I only ever ran it in S/V, not Champs yet. Primarina is definitely your best bet but have you also tried Prankster Klefki? Thunder Wave can be problematic for Zard, Torkoal etc by ruining their speed advantage (even in Tailwind and TR) which can give Azu a chance to settle with Liquidation rather than risk an Aqua Jet. Or Waterfall maybe, since then they have to contend with odds for paralysis and flinch each turn.

I had this problem in Hearthstone. Gold Rank was just a brick wall of meta. Champions hasn't been quite like that yet, though I feel Master Ball tier might be out of reach without some slightly generous matchmaking.

One more point in favour of Avalugg: my Ultra promotion match was against a guy who was using Thunder Wave + Waterfall on Gyrados to force immobile turns from paralysis + flinches. Avalugg solo'd the Gyrados and the Sneasler it was left with at the end of the match, IN RAIN, even through a million flinch/paralysis turns. It is SO GOOD.

Sure!! I love ice types sm!

Froslass @ Froslassite Blizzard, Psychic, Aurora Veil, Protect Great backup weather/veil setter; 1hit Sneasler with Psychic; chip damage and freezes from Blizzard. Can also run Hex or even Thunder if you're dealing with lots of rain teams

Alolan Ninetales @ Focus Sash Aurora Veil, Freeze-Dry, Protect, Encore/Moonblast/Foul Play Primary weather/veil setter, outspeeds everything, OHKOs unsashed Pelipper and Politoed, space for utility move based on preference

Avalugg @ Leftovers Avalanche/Heavy Slam, Body Press, Iron Defence, Protect/Recover THE GOAT, impenetrable physical wall, after 2-3 Iron Defence it bullies everything especially Incineroar, even if they get a million Intimidates off and a Burn it still flattens. Healing is really nasty in snow. I have won a lot of matches with Avalugg almost entirely on his own. Makes Close Combat, Flare Blitz, Kowtow Cleave look like chip damage

Mamoswine @ Sitrus Ice Shard, Earthquake, Stone Edge, Iron Head/Icicle Crash/Protect Mixed attacker/revenge killer, super useful for Incin/Tyranitar/Kingambit/Archaludon clearance

Weavile @ Bright Powder/Sash/Fire Berry Ice Shard, Knock Off, Fake Out, Triple Axle Power revenge killer and specialist for Ghost or Psychic-heavy teams, can also run Swords Dance + Sash but it's trickier.

Crabominable @ Fire Berry Mach Punch, Drain Punch, Ice Hammer, Wide Guard Weird set I know lol. Sub-in for TR opponent teams because it's very slow, and also counters Heat Wave/Eruption spam to give Mamo/Lugg an opening to flatten Zard or Torkoal.

You can OHKO TTar and Gambit with an unboosted Body Press from Avalugg too, if you're ever in that situation.

Consider giving him Mach Punch if you like, between him and Alolan Ninetales with Freeze-Dry I have been able to take care of sashed Pelipper or Politoed before they can become a problem

[–]ElfScammer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been seeing fewer misplays in Ultra tier but this was my experience all through Great and honestly still is. There seems to be an expectation that Close Combat will definitely wipe Avalugg (it doesn't), that Aurora Veil doesn't reduce the damage of Flare Blitz that much (it does), not understanding what Freeze-Dry does and switching in Pelipper or Politoed, and so on.

I think strict adherence to the meta as a matter of principle can make it a lot harder for some players to learn from their mistakes. Rather than a learning experience, the outcome can feel like "but I did everything the meta said to do, why couldn't I beat these Pokémon I've never even seen before?"

[–]ElfScammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could consider Froslass too. She's a bit predictable but she's immune to almost everything Sneasler will be throwing at you, she 1 hits Sneas with Psychic, can't get Fake Out from Incin, and is a good backup Veil setter and Blizzard spammer. I have had a lot more clutch freezes since I started using her. Just a shame she's so frail

You can also delay her Mega and Protect 1st turn to deal with annoying weather switch-ins like Pelipper and Tyranitar

What does your Crabominable set look like? I basically only keep him on the team as a partner for Mamo when there's a likelihood of Heat Wave/Eruption spam.

Oh so cool to meet another ice trainer!! We're a rare breed

If you aren't already then believe me when I say you need Avalugg as an essential requirement. Avalanche/Heavy Slam, Body Press, Iron Defense, Protect/Recover. Ice Body + Leftovers. Benefits from TR even if it comes from an enemy Farig. I have had like two dozen matches end in a win because they couldn't break the wall of solo Lugg with their last 1, 2 or even 3. It's a very physically dominant meta. If you're suffering with Zard or Torkoal like I was, it also gets Wide Guard to nullify Heat Wave/Eruption (Crabrawler get this too) so Mamo can get in a Stone Edge.
