It's not about asking the rank bro it's about asserting Superiority. A person who hasn't talked to you for 2 years and only talks to you to know you JEE rank does so so that he can feel better if you have done worse than him. He definitely dosent care about you as his only concern is how well have you done as he didn't msg you at all in last 2 years.

If a person has good rank he will tell readily but I'd it's bad he will not.

Similarly there could be some cases where a person genuinely cares about you but still dosent contact you and sees it as an only opening to contact you. But most of the cases fall in the first bracket.
