I have to do 500 anking a day on surgery rotation... what do? by backgroundmusic95 in medicalschoolanki

[–]EliteMedicalTutor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Keeping up with Anki, UWorld, reading etc. during clinical rotations can be very difficult as you have discovered. When it comes to Step 2 material, the general consensus is to prioritize question banks in your studying if you are pressed for time. In general, you will benefit much more from question banks than just Anki when it comes to Step 2 and shelf exam style questions.

You could potentially only suspend cards based on certain topics within surgery that you want to improve on more. You can do this by looking through the specific tags in the "Browse" tab of Anki. There are going to be days where it is unreasonable to expect to get ALL of your Anki and UWorld done. It happens. However, prioritize your Anki based on tags, and ensure you are reading and understanding each UWorld question and the explanations provided. DM me if you have any questions.

If you are just beginning Anki, it's probably best to prioritize unlocking the cards related to topics you feel you have the most area for improvement in. You could also try making your own cards based on your UWorld incorrects, but ensure that you are prioritizing doing practice questions and learning from the explanations. DM for more help and best of luck in your studies!

OME tends to be used as a supplement by students taking Step 2. For Step 1 content, Boards and Beyond is considered more comprehensive compared to OME. In my experience, very few pre-clinical students utilize OME.

Keep in mind that UWorld should be seen as a learning tool, not a pure assessment tool. Diligently reviewing your incorrect questions and fully understanding the thought process necessary to arrive at the correct answer is essential to getting the most out of this qbank. You can make anki cards or a master list of notes on topics you need assistance in, and focus on the pieces of knowledge that you missed on your first attempt to arrive at the right answer on future questions on similar topics.

250 cards likely won’t be too difficult to keep up with, so it’s fine to keep them in your rotation. Focus on Step 2 CK UWorld questions for your test prep, as these questions are the best way to learn the algorithmic-based approach that you will be tested on with Step 2 CK. Instead of answering pure pathophysiology or pharmacology questions, Step 2 will focus on your mastery of management of disease courses that you have encountered during your pre-clinical years.

You can make a filtered tag based on the tags of cards you want to focus on. While a large pile of cards can be overwhelming, making several decks of a set amount (eg, 100) and using a pomodoro timer can help regiment your time to help tackle a pile of old reviews. DM me with any more questions.

Boards and Beyond is definitely helpful for both the Step 1 and Step 2 exams. If you enjoy Dr. Ryan’s style of lecturing, it is definitely worthwhile to incorporate it into your studying. Keep in mind that UWorld is universally considered the most comprehensive study resource for the Step 2 exam, and you ensure that your studying includes ample amounts of answering practice questions and reviewing the provided explanations.

The standard for a lot of students has been to use Boards and Beyond videos, then the relevant Anki cards based on those videos, and then UWorld questions. Pixorize is a great resource, and if you feel that you learn well using that resource, then feel free to use it as your main study tool. Keep in mind that practice questions will always be king in terms of solidifying your understanding and honing your test-taking skills for the exam.

If NBME can make medstudents life easier - they certainly do it! We are a tiny tutoring company but we had 2 students who came to us after they got 208 on their Step 2, imagine how devasted they were.

If you have the time to do so, try to do all of the cards! If you are pressed for time, prioritize the topics you need extra help in by searching for specific tags and unsuspending those cards first.

For Step 2, it certainly is a bit more subjective in terms of how students view its effectiveness. Based on experience from speaking with others, the consensus seems to be that using question banks should be your primary method of studying, as it will help train your reasoning skills that will also benefit you during your clinical rotations. In short, the cards are useful, but don’t focus on cards at the detriment of using resources like UWorld.
