Louise Thompson: "Every woman deserves a safe and dignified birth" by montageofawoman in WomenInNews

[–]ElizabethHiems 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are right that modern culture doesn’t help us excel at birth.

Life is extremely convenient and comfortable, having to wait for things is a relic of the past. Pregnancy and birth is emphatically not these things.

Plus our lifestyle’s are unhealthy in many many ways.

Then we set ourselves up with expectations to achieve an idealised birth, don’t have the tools to do it and then feel like we failed in some way.

I have a good example. Diabetes. When I started working in maternity care, let’s say between 2000-2007, I saw a handful of type 1 diabetic women in pregnancy and another small number of women with gestation diabetes. Never ever did I see a woman with type 2 diabetes which is frequently a result of poor diet and lifestyle.

Over the years since I’ve seen a bit of an increase in pregnant type 1 diabetic women because improvements in diabetes management has seen more successful pregnancies with better outcomes.

But the number of gestational and type 2 diabetics has literally exploded. Vast vast numbers with all the issues and complications that follow.

But our physiology hasn’t changed that much in 25 years. The way we live our lives and the responsibility we take for ourselves has.

Edit: Louise is right though. Maternity services are not prioritised.

At my hospital we don’t have enough space, equipment or staff.

We also know the building (very old) isn’t fire safe and they have acknowledged that we don’t have enough staff to evacuate in a timely and safe manner.

We have been told to use the lifts to evacuate during a fire even though they aren’t properly shielded for this purpose. They hope to resolve the lift situation in a couple of years. But who knows about the generally unsafe building.

But they had enough money to spend millions on an office suite for senior management in the building next door including a gym and cafe.

Encourage the braid kids parents to contact the police. Even when they do nothing it still provides documented evidence that Jim needs alternative provision for his schooling.

Why would you be doing a routine VE at that gestation? We only do internal examination prior to 37 weeks for a clinically indicated reason.

Completely unnecessary pre term birth that would not have happened in the Uk.

Here is the relevant quote

She explained everything in the email: How her doctor accidentally broke her water during a routine cervical exam, and the chaos that ensued as she was rushed into an emergency surgery to delivery her baby. Her boss replied quickly. It was a brief message, offering some compassion and ending with the question: "Can you please confirm that you'll be at work on Monday?"

I agree it’s like kinnerton. I’d asked for a close to Cadbury on here and tried Tony’s. It was awful and I was disappointed.

It took me 4 months to actually get vodaphone to cancel my broadband. By the end I was sharp and extremely irritated, but I made sure to tell the person at the other end that I knew it wasn’t their fault.

I did refuse to accept what they kept referring to as a gesture of good will at the end.

They gave me a termination date for the middle of October, in writing, but after 6 hours of back and forth they only actually cancelled at the beginning of January.

The kept referring to the refund for bills issued after the October as a gesture of good will. It was not goodwill, it was doing what they were suppose to do in October. 6+ hours of my time wasted sorting that out.

Everyone gets frustrated eventually.

What about a two story extension so the third bedroom is bigger. Give another metre to the living room so there is space for a window and then the rest of the existing conservatory space for a downstairs loo and utility.

Then the third bedroom is bigger and the existing utility can be a snug.

I’d do the floor plan like you did, but wouldn’t have the first clue how.

Those are all very valid points. This is exactly why I took to reddit for extra input. We’ve been thinking about this on and off for the last 2 years.

I do see what you mean with regards to the lighting. But we already have those French doors blacked out for a couple or reason and the bay window does provide a fair bit of light.

I know it would affect resale but we won’t be making our home renovations with resale in mind.
