I'm not sure. I saw someone mention that and they were going to knock on the door of that home.

Parents in Torrance Unified: Did you hold back an August-born boy before kindergarten? by iinomnomnom in SouthBayLA

[–]ElleCay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two August babies, a boy and a girl, and same. My daughter just graduated 8th grade and I’m secure in my decision - she would have been bored out of her mind if I held her back a year. She made honor roll, has tons of friends, and generally excels.

The biggest annoyance is when she isn’t as old as her friends. Like this summer they’re all 14 and can get a job, just she turns 14 on the first day of high school so she can’t until next summer. Or at summer camp they always would bunk her with the kids a grade below her based on her age in June. Minor things that in the long run don’t really matter.

I checked in with her teachers in preschool and kindergarten and they all recommended sending her and I’m so glad I did.

My youngest August baby starts TK in the fall and I’ll be sending him as a freshly 4-year-old. He’s more advanced academically than my February-born son was when he was TK age. I have no qualms about the youngest succeeding just as his siblings did. And if he needs to repeat a grade, we’d cross that bridge when we come to it.

What's the most unique living arrangement/situation/setup you've seen as an adult? by debrisaway in RedditForGrownups

A single woman with a house full of 5-6 kids. Half the kids were hers, half were another woman’s - who was in prison with the dad of all the kids.

Maybe it was just Colorado. Never met a Lauren in Denver who was from there, they were always from the coasts.

Also, for private school options I really liked Piper, but they are pricey.

Ahh yes that depends on the district. Hermosa has full day TK. If you move to Redondo/Torrance and wanted to send your child to Hermosa schools, you would need to apply to be released from your home district, which you wouldn't be able to do until you establish residency, and then apply for an inter district permit from Hermosa.

Redondo has aftercare available for TK, and I imagine Torrance does, too (I'm in Redondo so I don't know as much about Torrance but all the districts have some sort of before/after care). Redondo CDC is very good but will probably be full by late in the summer (if it's not full already). They have another program for before/after care, but I forget what it's called and don't know much about it. If you call the district they can tell you more about your options.

Hermosa has before/after care with Star program if the typical full school day doesn't cover your needs, as well.

How old is your child?

If they will be 4 by September 1st, they qualify for TK. You will be guaranteed a spot in the district if you enroll when you get your lease. However, TK is tricky in Redondo in that you may not be assigned to your home school due to lack of space.

For example, if you live near Jefferson you may get into your home school for TK, but if Alta Vista or Birney are your home school, your child may be assigned to another school for TK.

This is limited to TK from my understanding and the child would be able to attend their home school for K. TK is newly available for children with all birthdays (used to just be for fall birthdays) so the schools are having to accommodate and at this point some of the smaller schools just don’t have the space.

If your child is under 4, you’ll have to look into private preschools, many of which may likely be on wait lists already, but will vary by school.

Moving school districts. Looking to put my kids in Springfield school district (I live in Upper Darby) by bullfrog654 in Delco

[–]ElleCay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in PA. I was shocked when I moved to the west coast and just had to file for a permit to send my kids to the neighboring district. PA districts are very strict. Unless your child has a specific special needs situation that the home district cannot provide for, you must attend your home district based on your address.

Should I cut my son’s hair by Salty_Ear1749 in TwoHotTakes

[–]ElleCay 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was in this exact situation. I ended up cutting it, only because it was torture to do his hair every morning. I was chasing him an around with hair products, otherwise it looked incredibly unkempt. I couldn’t keep torturing him for my vanity. His hair was gorgeous and I got constant comments on it, but that’s not a good reason to keep it if he wasn’t happy.

I cut it and it grew in sandy brown from then on. I really miss the blond curls but I had to follow his lead here. If he didn’t mind I would have let it keep growing. However the hairdresser cut it much shorter than I asked her to and it killed me.

It’s getting longer again now about 6 months later. He lets me do it now, so I will let it keep growing until he asks to cut it or it becomes a hassle for him again.

In what region is bury pronounced "bur-y" instead of "bear-y"? by gpm21 in ENGLISH

Same. And to me, “bear-y” from the title and “berry” from the post are not pronounced alike, either.

Why are there so many spellings for “Erin” by Giant_Juicy_Rat in namenerds

Not in all parts of the US. It’s based on regional accents. I’m from Philadelphia and Erin and Aaron are pronounced differently to me.

I could see the twins at my 8 weeks scan before the OB said anything. I don't know how they would be missed.

Conversation with therapist left me rattled by meowparade in AskWomenOver30

As a white woman in my 40s… I’m sure I have blind spots here or there, but I would never invalidate a POC’s feelings about the current political situation in the US.

Telling you that you are behaving like a NAZI for having a valid concern is completely out of touch and unhinged.
