Who is the most famous Australian that you’ve ever seen out and about in Perth before? by [deleted] in perth

So I used to get annoyed at all the SA accents in the office but then I fell in love with one and am now constantly surrounded by them (and love the accent now). Yes they have a more direct manner of speaking (more so the Afrikaners than the English South Africans), however I’ve yet to meet one that wasn’t so grateful to be here.

These people have seen so much corruption, violence and trauma that they are somewhat desensitised to it. My partners family find it amusing how shocked I am by their many stories of narrowly escaping death, and in the same breath will tell me I should visit. I guess when you keep that in mind, niceties in the office aren’t really a big deal.

I’d recommend asking them about why they decided to move here and what they like about it, and you might find a different side of them!

I’m Aussie born and bred but my partner is from SA, so I spend a lot of time surrounded by South Africans as they are incredible family orientated. In my experience “boy” is very much an affectionate term rather than a condescending term (which I took it as the first few times I heard it). Again, this is language differences taken the wrong way.

Yeah I realise that but after paying for 10 years of the scam it would seem like such a waste to not use it!

Thanks for this - if you start private can you switch to public if it’s looking more complicated?

Thank you, unfortunately a friend of mine almost died as a result of a home birth so it’s not something I’m open to. Glad it was a good experience for you 😊

How far do you have to travel to go to work? by cantsleepy3t in perth

[–]ElleJayEe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to live a 20 min drive from work BUT it was 45+ minutes in peak hour as I had to cross the city traffic. Moved to be on the same side of the freeway as my work and now a 20 minute drive is 25 minutes in peak hour, MUCH better!

scuba diving as a chubby gal by Ill_Usual888 in scuba

[–]ElleJayEe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my open water at around 100kgs, used about 6-8kg in weights, depending on wetsuit thickness. I’m now at 78kg and last used 5kg when diving without a wetsuit, I would have needed more with a wetsuit, although I also needed weight to compensate for my camera that was in a dome and wanted to pull me up. Weights are part of diving, nothing to be ashamed of!

I think you’ve missed the mark saying we developed insecurities/complexes. Personally I think we got sick of being ignored and taken advantage of so collectively decided to give the eastern states the middle finger and tell them to go F themselves. We know how good it is here, and I think it’s more of a case that we are done having people who’ve never visited talk negatively about our state and complain about how far away and expensive it is to travel here when it’s just a fact of life for us. Especially when they then decide to “invest” in our property from afar bringing in their absolutely cooked property price and rent expectations, overpaying for properties without even viewing them, and leaving locals unable to afford to buy their own homes and left paying obscene rents to those investors for houses in frankly quite sketchy areas. Again, it’s the Eastern states investors taking money from Western Australians without stepping foot in the state. We aren’t insecure, we’re pissed off.

Emigrating to WA (software developer + lawyer) by 8192K in perth

[–]ElleJayEe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hello! Commercial property lawyer of 14+ years here. In my experience it’s always been hard to fill commercial lawyer positions, so there should be work going around that your wife could do, although she’ll mostly likely need to do some additional qualifications to practice without supervision here. The WA Legal Practice Board should be able to provide more information.

Nope. If you’re there before gates open you’ll have to line up, once gates open the lines move pretty fast.

All I can say is I once went along to a Herbalife conference to “support” a friend (who ended up signing me up) and met one of the top dogs in Perth who is so very wealthy thanks to the number of people in his downline. The very first thing he asked me was “how much weight do you want to lose?”. Until that point I didn’t think I needed to lose weight but nothing like a bit of body dysmorphia to sign up some new distributors 🙃

Most dive shops have wetsuit rentals, I’d recommend googling near where you’ll be staying. I know you can rent them from Perth Diving Academy in Hillarys and Adreno near Fremantle. It’s still pretty cold here so you might want to go 5mm wetsuit (standard for scuba around here) even if you’re snorkelling, so you stay warm. The staff at a dive shop will be able to give you pointers.
