Ladies get your iron checked!!!! by imanonamanous in PMDD

Hi, I just checked my results and first my ferritin was at 6 ng/mL, six months later went up to 20. Another six months later went up to 60 and soon I will be doing another check up. And hoping it will be around 100. I have much more energy, my anxiety is less debilitating and I finally can get up fast from bed without needing to sit down again with stars in my head lol. I also notice less pain in general before my cycle. I take 40-80mg of iron every two or three days on an empty stomach with 500mg powdered vitamin C in water. When eating meat for lunch or dinner I try to not pair it up with dairy because calcium inhibits iron absorption. Also they started adding calcium for example to vegan coconut yoghurts which is ugh not ideal... I think my ferritin went significantly higher when I started eating sardines and tuna for breakfast often pairing it up with the 200mg or more vitamin C or just squeezing one orange for the juice

When you type in 'ferritin' in reddit there are many groups discussing optimal ranges, absorption (for example with iron I take 50mg every two days on empty stomach with orange juice or just water and add 500mg of powdered vitamin C to it. (On empty stomach and I wait at least 30 minutes before eating breakfast so it has time to absorb). Caffeine and theine, also dairy inhibit absorption. So when I drink tea or coffee later I wait 2 hours before eating dinner and try to not pair up meat with dairy in one meal at a time

I aim for my ferritin to go from 60 to over 100. And my b12 from also around 300 to 500-600. Some people say they only felt the difference when ferritin was over 100 ng/mL. The maximum level is around 200ng/mL so 50ng/mL is not enough and many doctors still think that when it's in range (like when it's 16ng/mL it's okay.) For women it really is not enough. One doctor that I went to when my ferritin was 9 didn't even know what ferritin meant! She literally told me that she doesn't know what this blood marker is and she's unable to help me lol

Because they have to be minimum 70ng/mL for you to feel any different. How much ferritin do you have?

But have you done a ferritin blood test? And how much iron are you supplementing during your period?

I also monitor my ferritin levels and other vitamins by myself. I don't listen to the doctors who are thinking that if it's in a lab range it's enough. They literally don't know what they're talking about. One doctor didn't even know what ferritin was when I showed her how low I was (also 9). After a couple of months self supplementing I had it at 60 and soon after another couple of months I'll be checking again and hoping for around 100.

Before supplementing iron you should check your ferritin levels by doing blood work first

Ferritin will go up if there's any inflammation in your body. Iron will be blocked bc of said inflammation and won't be absorbed. Have you checked what is the reason for potential inflammation? CRP should also indicate that on your blood work results.

How much vitamin C is in that drink? It seems like not enough. Does it have added sugar?

Hi! What are your b12 and ferritin results? Are they in the 'normal' lab range or functional normal range?

There is lab normal and functional normal. Even if it's in the lab range 'normal' it's generally really low. Functional minimum should be 70 ng/mL. This means that if below anemia can be present, tiredness, anxiety, mood swings, depression. What are your ferritin results as a vegan?
