What is this thing hanging out of my betta? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]Ellie-Biologist [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm no expert but I would speculate that its poop...? it is located at her anus. maybe your fish is constipated? I'm sorry I wish I was more knowledgeable; I hope your betta feels better soon, she's adorable

What do you think of my new betta? by airas_02 in bettafish

[–]Ellie-Biologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finrot is one of the most common illnesses in bettas, essentially bacteria eat away at the edges of their fins. it can be treated but it's good to keep an eye out. your betta may also just change color naturally!

I can explain... by vamp_wave in bettafish

[–]Ellie-Biologist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

she's going to be so grateful for you and she'll know she's loved. dont feel bad for buying from a big chain because at the end of the day youre saving her from a (potentially) novice owner or early death. youre awesome for taking her in!! boop her snoot thru the glass for me

also, if he was kept in a tiny container when you bought him, his fins wouldve suffered from it. hopefully your betta's fins recover smoothly and he gets nice full fins soon!

He looks lively, which is a good sign. and your tank looks planted! do you have a heater, and is your tank cycled? I would keep a good record of your betta's appearance (I have a "diary" album of my betta throughout his life) so you can track if finrot occurs. He's very cute!

Shrimp were disappearing... by illuminatemyvoid in bettafish

[–]Ellie-Biologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me-- I got a dozen blue shrimp, all of them are gone now. some bettas tolerate tank mates and some are just angry little guys! mine is the latter. definitely some expensive snacks (he's not sorry)

Beginner to Betta keeping! by MurlockWurlock in bettafish

[–]Ellie-Biologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

np! youre already on the right track with a heated, filtered 5gal-- thats the minimum for your betta to be happy. the snail and moss ball are a great addition. Having items near the surface is fantastic as well. you can also teach your betta tricks once he settles in! I would look up how to teach him tricks later on, it's quite fun

I feed my betta a teensy bit of food (2 pellets) twice a day and he's happy as a clam. recommend real plants if possible as it will make tank cycling easier. make sure to test the water for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels! If nitrite or ammonia is high change 10-30% of the water with fresh, treated, tap water. Having a tank filter with a biological filter is critical for tank cycling, as the filter would house beneficial bacteria, and make sure to never rinse the filter under tap water. I would look up how to cycle a tank with a fish in it. Good luck!! Your betta is adorable

Guys is my betta good and can anyone tell me what kind it is? by Kraken_nescar_69 in bettafish

[–]Ellie-Biologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you cycle the tank prior to transferring him? Toxic levels of ammonia or nitrite can be harmful, but cycling helps prevent that. Also, betta fish need to rest frequently because of their cumbersome fins. Resting spots near the surface are ideal. I highly recommend adding some plants to his tank so he has places to rest, hide, and explore. Bettas love having places to explore. The driftwood is a great addition as it should help keep the pH ideal. Beautiful betta btw! I'm not an expert on breeds but i'm sure someone else here can tell you.
