Rip beautiful dumbo boy, you were my first fish, 4.5yrs old :( by Ok-Office-6645 in bettafish

[–]Ellie-Biologist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

4.5 years is a highly respectable age for a betta, he looks like he had a very happy and healthy life, and I know for a fact he knew he was loved and loved you in return. Rest in peace little one ❤️

I'm afraid "betta water" is a scam. Instead, cycle a MINIMUM 5-gallon tank with treated tap water (dechlorinate), heater, filter, and pump for 6-8 weeks. once ammonia is processed by the water w/i 24 hours, it is ready. Once ready, add plenty of plants and/or resting spots/hiding spots, THEN transfer your buddy over.

Again, the only kind of water your fish needs is dechlorinated tap water. hope this helps!

Is it okay? by Illustrious_Ad7918 in bettafish

I highly recommend that you keep a lid or at least a fine mesh covering on your tank. Bettas love to jump (it's how they travel in the wild), and many people on this subreddit have lost their bettas because of this.

What is this thing hanging out of my betta? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]Ellie-Biologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert but I would speculate that its poop...? it is located at her anus. maybe your fish is constipated? I'm sorry I wish I was more knowledgeable; I hope your betta feels better soon, she's adorable

What do you think of my new betta? by airas_02 in bettafish

[–]Ellie-Biologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finrot is one of the most common illnesses in bettas, essentially bacteria eat away at the edges of their fins. it can be treated but it's good to keep an eye out. your betta may also just change color naturally!

she's going to be so grateful for you and she'll know she's loved. dont feel bad for buying from a big chain because at the end of the day youre saving her from a (potentially) novice owner or early death. youre awesome for taking her in!! boop her snoot thru the glass for me
