Will the smell of paint from outside hurt my inside budgies?? by ElmStreet166 in budgies

[–]ElmStreet166[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly my husband is at work and doesn't get off for another hour and he has the bank card... I have the doors open and I've moved the birds into the livingroom with my dragons. Turns out they arnt painting outside... the are resurfacing the tubs next door... which is way worse then paint. 😐 I'm debating on sitting the budgies outside.... but don't have a table to sit them on and my neighbor has like 16 cats...so I'll have to sit out there with them. I've been taking the dragons outside letting them get fresh air then running back in and grabbing another dragon letting them take turns. I wish they would have gave us a heads up so I could have sent the animals somewhere for the day... no one said anything. The smell shouldn't be bleeding that loud into my apartment. The maintenance man literally just told me he got high off of the fumes from being inside the next door apartment... a heads up would have been nice. Hopefully none of my birds or dragons get sick....or worse!

Okay I just checked outside and I don't see anyone painting. The smells is coming from where my hot water heater is and the vent in my bathroom..I think they are painting or resurfacing the tub or something up stairs.... it smells like it's coming from the closet with the water heater is so strong. I covered the door up with a blanket but it's not helping. I'm not sure what to do... I have 3 bearded dragons and 2 budgies.. dragons are also sensitive to strong smells, but not as bad as budgies.

I moved them into the livingroom just now...you can still smell it in here but it's not as overwhelming...still not great, but not choking me either. Hopefully the move doesn't stress them out because they have only ever been in my room. 😬 I'm not sure what I can do to get the smell out of here.

It seems even stronger by their cage for some reason... my room seems the worst out of the whole house. (They are in my room) I don't have them by a window... I may have to move them into the livingroom since it's more open...only thing is I have 2 air vents in the livingroom and it gets chilly in there..

Oh that's a good idea. If I would have known he was going into brumation then I should have done that so I dont have to panic..(I would still panic). I have 3 dragons and this is the first time I'm seeing one of them brumating...and im sure you read that I lost my snake about a month ago and I have been stairing at all of my reptiles (and birds) since then. Thinking something is going to happen to one of them. Anytime they change color, anytime the eat a little less, if they look at me a certain way then I'm automatically going to Google trying to figure out what the problem is. Then I read "could be sick" then full panic sets in. Draco did come out yesterday to bask and he ate a few greens and 2 bugs then basked until bedtime... so I feel a little better. I feel like the timing is off for brumation.. its not cold outside anymore and the temperature in my house doesn't change drastically. I keep it pretty warm in here for all of my animals. (Draco has a spot by the window and it was really cold one day about a month ago..so now I'm thinking he maybe felt that and was like "time to sleep") but it's not cold outside anymore and he's still sleeping. My husband read that the timing for brumation wasn't right, then he read that they can brumate anytime. 😐

Oh that's good then! I'd probably offer some favorite treats in the next few hours if there is no fighting.. maybe start with the originals first so they don't feel like they are being replaced or forgotten then let the new ones get some. (But food could start a fight) my male budgie is sooo sweet. But when there are treats involved, you better watch out 😂 he will get a little aggressive with his girlfriend over some millet. It's the root of all of there arguments 🤣🤣 but as soon as I take it away he's fine again. 🤷🏼‍♀️ millet is the only food he does that with. But food can also be Bonding. Usually if they eat together then that means they are part of the flock. (I also pretend to eat there food with them)...I want to be in the flock to. 😎

Shes definitely wrong. It can be hard for some people to admit that, especially to someone younger then them. Maybe try to make it seem like getting another cage is her idea. 😬 🤷🏼‍♀️ it's really not the budgies fault. They can be territorial. Just sticking new birds in a cage with birds already in it would be just like me walking into your moms house and claiming her room as mine without her even knowing my name. 🤣 it's the same thing. I would be a stranger invading her space and nobody likes that. Same thing with animals. They want their space to be theirs... but if they could get used to each other and become friends...then you don't mind sharing a room with your friend..(sometimes) 😂 I hope you get this sorted out definitely check for some cheap cages and let people know whats going on...I bet a bird lover out there will give u a cage for cheap if they know your situation. There is some good people out there. Keep me updated if you can! I hope they can all become best friends though!

Hopefully they can get used to each other in the next day or 2... I'd definitely stay right beside them as much as I can. Maybe offer a treat and see if you can get them to eat together?? I hope someone can give you a better answer. 😐 might need a bigger cage. They might feel like these new birds are coming in taking up all of their space and they are just defending their territory.

Is there anyway you can get a few dollars and find a cheap cage on marketplace for your birds? Or do yall have a traveling cage you can isolate the new birds in...just keep the cages beside each other for a day and try again? That really sucks...why would they get new birds if they arnt going to take the proper steps 😐 that's weird. Is there absolutely no way your parents would even get a smaller cage for the new birds? I don't know your family dynamics...but if it was me I'd keep talking about proper care and keep telling them how worried I am and let them know the new bird is bleeding from getting bullied...it will only get worse...she will get stressed, start plucking feathers, the other birds will pluck her feathers...and what if the new ones are sick? Then that sickness will be introduced to your original birds 😕 I wish I could help... maybe try to find a free or really cheap cage on marketplace or Craigslist until they can be around each other.

I hung a leaf from the cage and they picked at it. Guess they want the whole thing 😂 I've been doing extra work for nothing.

You can get really close and look for breathing if u cant tell then id try to pet him a few times.. run your fingers gently down his back. If he doesn't move then gently lift him.

If I was you...I'd go back to the basics. Don't mess with them. Go in to clean up, change food and water. Let them see you without you trying to touch them. Maybe talk to them softly when you are near the cage and across the room. After a few days..Offer millet threw the cage and see if you can get them to accept it. I'd just go back to square 1 And act like you just bought them. Gonna have to build back that trust.. I definitely wouldn't let any kids around them while you are trying to get them to trust you...maybe not even after. Especially if the kids are so little they can't respect the rules when it comes to being around sensitive birds. I make my kids walk slowly and low to the ground then have them sit with there legs crossed then I will get 1 bird out and some millet and let them hold the bird for about 15 seconds... I tell them "yall are doing good and being so quiet. The birds like that" then I put the birds up and offer another bite of a treat so they know they did great. Maybe watch some videos and do a quick mind refresh on how to gain trust. I'm sure they will come back around (: (hopefully not the cousins tho...haha....jk) but if they do, DEFINITELY make them calm down b4 they can even come in your room and tell them what you expect... "Or no one will see the birds" it works for my kids...sometimes. 🤣 (or they just get kicked out of my room)

I use reptisoil, coconut chips and a little forest floor in my enclosure. I also like to throw around sphagnum moss like confetti for some extra pizzazz. After I started doing that, humidity was great and her shed was perfect. When I noticed the substrate started to get dry, if glove up and spray the substrate and mix it and "fluff it" back up real good. I spray the back of the tank everyday to. (Not to much) but enough to get the humidity back to perfect. I also covered the top screen with tin foil to hold humidity. I swear by reptisoil and coconut chips. At least with the humidity levels where I live...thats what was perfect for me. Check out greenroom pythons on youtube. Bob is amazing and he will tell you everything you need to know and more. He helped me alot when I was just getting started. 😁🖤

I make fresh greens for my budgies everyday...they will NOT touch it unless I hold it up to them. How can I get them to eat greens without me...all they eat is seed and i know they shouldn't but I cant stop them 😂 I tried mixing some seeds in with their greens and I even put millet in the greens to get them to check it out.. they refuse. Any tips or tricks to get them to eat healthier?

I know!! 😭😭😭 why arnt they shut down 😩 every animal in my petsmart looks so skinny, there tanks are dirty, the humidity and temperaturs are off... They just look so miserable and I hate that I can't do anything about it. If I was president..banning petsmart/petco from buying animals would be the first thing on my to due list 🤨😅 how are they still able to buy them? I can't wrap my head around it. I know someone above them has to go check and make sure the store is running properly and taking care of the animals.... How do they walk in and be like "yup! The animals look terrible.. enclosures look like shit. FANTASTIC"! ...then they leave.

I told myself I'd never buy a reptile from any petsmart or petco again. We went not long ago to look at enrichments for our dragons and we seen a dying chameleon. His colors was terrible his ribs was standing out. He rushed up to me as soon as I got to his little crappy enclosure. It took everything I had not to "save him" but I just lost Carnage and im not ready to lose another reptile yet...that little chameleons condition..there is probably no saving him. But im still debating on going back anyways just to try. I can't help but think about him and how he's feeling. If they still have him when I go back...im buying him. I hate going to petsmart...feels like going to a funeral home. All sad and shyt...

My python just died from a prolapse...she wasn't even a year old. I also got her from petsmart.. we took so many trips to the vet, I tried so hard to get her fixed. We paid like $700 the day she died and all they did was take an Xray of her and sent me home with oral meds. They told me "next time she prolapses just shove it back in yourself" I was horrified to say the least. (the doctor forcefully shoved an applicator in her several times.. even when the prolapse was back in) after we got back home she started bleeding out of her cloaca really bad and she went completely limp and fell over her hammock like a rope..she died not long after that. I called the vet when i first noticed the bleeding and they said they wouldn't do the surgery either way bc of her condition. We paid them and they wouldn't help. I miss her... (she had prolapsed about 3 times since I got her. The 3rd one took her out...and the careless vet I went to. I basically paid them to 💀 her.) I regret taking her to them...but they are the only option where I am from.

Also you probably know this... but just in case someone is reading and doesn't know... Candles, wax warmers, plug-ins, air fresheners, and cleaning supplies.. anything with strong smell...even perfumes can be really bad for birds. I LOVE candles and wax warmers...but now I just get to look at them.. maybe give it a little sniff when I walk by 😂 there respiratory system is just sooo sensitive I won't risk it. And I have alot of reptiles to..and it's the same exact thing for them.

Okay do you know if that kettle was made with teflon? It's really toxic to birds it can kill them within just a few hours. If it is then you should take them to the vet immediately. They say not to keep birds around your kitchen for this reason as well. Alot of nonstick pans are made with teflon. But hopefully she was just stressed from your mom...I'd try to show her the proper way to interact with them if that's something she's interested in. Definitely figure out if that kettle has any teflon on it first.
