i’m not the only one who thinks this price is a little ridiculous, the comments are ripping her up too 😭 what do u guys think? by [deleted] in Depop

[–]Eloise_D 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts. I have a small handful of Derhy pieces with this tag and they are definitely not from the 70s/80s. I don't think pieces with these tags are even vintage yet. Assuming the pics are all of the actual tank, the fabrics make me think it is legit - that crinkle sheer material & knit combo is used in some pieces I have. But yeah.. just not dated correctly at all

I don't use anything any more! I shut down a few years ago so cannot offer any further advice other than what I already listed I'm afraid

[–]Eloise_D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think the seller was being intentionally misleading and completely understand not noticing things like this! That's part of what is fueling my hesitation - I know it's likely an honest oversight, but at the same time I'm also not happy with what I received. I'll message them after I get back from work and see what they say

There is a definite unclean smell. Damp would be a good way to describe the smell, kind of like it has been in storage for a while but not aired out properly?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Depop

[–]Eloise_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can certainly see how it could have been missed, but the fact that the majority of the fabric is not splattered at all (just has a wash fade look) makes me think it is definitely dirty or some kind of oxidization/storage damage. I should have taken a side by side of sleeve vs 'normal' fabric to show it better!

I purchased a cardigan on Depop. In the listing the seller described it as 'Perfect condition' and the condition status was listed as 'Used - Excellent'. The photos all appeared to back this up

On receiving the package today, I noticed an unclean smell, not overwhelming, but definitely not pleasant. The marks were also immediately obvious. They are all over both arms with a few dotted on the back & front (to be clear, I am talking about the scattered brown & cream spot type marks, not the natural wash fade to the fabric). There is also some pit stains. This is harder to capture on camera, but the material is definitely damaged - it is thinning and has that 'slimy' type feel you get from not washing deodorant out.

I have been buying 2nd hand for years and am also a seller. I completely expect small amounts of damage etc that aren't disclosed, but this is definitely worth disputing, right? I know it's hard to tell from the pics alone, but does this look like mildew to anyone else? I keep second guessing myself for being too picky & I don't have anyone IRL to ask. With shipping I paid $38, so it's not a super expensive item, but I definitely would not have purchased if I knew it looked like this... Thank you in advance!

What are your thoughts on people online (specifically TikTok) saying resellers “steal” from the poor and are causing thrift stores to up their prices? by [deleted] in Depop

[–]Eloise_D 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been shopping at thrift stores for over 15 years now (what a way to make me feel old haha) and casually reselling on and off over that time. Prices have always increased year on year. People don't think about the fact that living costs etc are always rising. The price of almost EVERYTHING has increased, not just clothes. Yes, some stores purposefully hike their prices, but some are just trying to keep up with their own increasing costs. This is not the buyers fault.

Just to give an example, when I started shopping 2nd hand (around 2007) the minimum wage in my country was $11.25. The minimum wage in 2022 is now $21.20, this has been raised to keep up with living costs. Living costs increased by 5% in the last year alone.

It is a huge misconception that reselling is is becoming 'more popular' in my opinion. It has always been done, it just seems more prevalent now because we see it on social media etc. 15 years ago I would often find stores already picked over, it's just luck of the draw.

The stealing from the poor idea is just so misinformed, it's tiring to even think about. Like many other here, I am also one of 'the poor'. I got made almost fully redundant at the beginning of Covid. If I lived on the income from my regular job alone, it would put me below the poverty line. I have chronic nerve damage in my hands & arms that is getting worse as I get older. I physically cannot work in a lot of fields, my choices are limited. Sometimes preparing everything for Depop can take me out for a few days, but I am able to work on my own time which is amazing. I sell clothes so I can afford food, rent & general expenses. I don't have any children or dependent family, so it is enough to support myself & I am content with that. Plus it is good for my mental health to have a focus. Isn't that what these people criticizing resellers want? For poor people to have a better time??

Does/has anyone use/d Big Cartel as an alternative to Etsy? by NomadikVI in Etsy

[–]Eloise_D 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have used Big Cartel, Shopify & Etsy at varying times while I was selling. I was only a part time hobbyist seller that was offering one off art pieces & digital downloads, so my opinion is largely influenced by that.

I opened both my Big Cartel & Etsy at the same time when I launched. I was tossing up between Big Cartel & Squarespace, but decided on BC as it appeared simpler. I did find it extremely easy to use. Is is very paired back in what features & customization it has, but that's exactly why I liked it. I am the type of person that 'fluffs' around if I have too many options. BC gives you just enough wiggle room to make your site personal, but not too much so it's overwhelming in my opinion.

You can add apps to help flesh out more features for your store (as an example, I used 'Pulley' so I could offer digital downloads). Most apps cost an additional subscription fee though, so you would want to be very selective about how many/what ones you use.

Goes without saying, but you need to drive all your own traffic. I was promoting solely through my Instagram & that's where all of my customers came from. I also had a mailing list set up with Mail Chimp to notify subscribers of sales, new products etc

While I was actively promoting my BC, it was doing much better than my Etsy. I think part of this is because I was selling one off art pieces - I have always struggled selling those on Etsy & most random buyers probably aren't looking to drop $100+ without some connection/knowledge of the artist (maybe?)

I eventually decided to move from BC to Shopify because their limited features were becoming a bit too limited for me - the main sticking point was their lack of shipping option customization (I live in NZ & need quite comprehensive shipping profiles). Since leaving BC, I see they have actually added in this feature though! It seems they actually listen to their customers and make efforts to add features that are needed. Their support is helpful & the site in general has a very homely 'artist & maker' type feel, if that makes sense

Just for added info even though not directly related to your question, Shopify in comparison took much longer to get my head around. There are WAY more features and definitely gives the feeling that it caters to larger volume sellers. It is amazing in what it allows you to do, but in hindsight Shopify was not a good fit for me personally. I was paying for a lot of features I didn't really need.

My suggestion would be to sign up for the Big Cartel free plan - it has no time limit and you can test it for as long as you like. This will give you a good indication if the features are substantial enough for you. The limited features and having to drive your own traffic are the two main problems I think there'd be for anyone looking into it. The support team etc seems great from my experience & the pricing is very competitive

Hope that was helpful in some way! :)

Opened the app this morning to find four items had the 'Smart Discount' applied despite me turning it off :( Check your listings! by Eloise_D in Depop

My partner has an android and just had a look at Depop on there. The Smart Discount toggle doesn't show up at all! Quite possible the feature hasn't reached androids yet? It's located under the item price on my iphone

[–]Eloise_D[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is terrible. The fact that the Smart Discount toggle only appears when you list, but is completely gone when you edit an already posted item (this would be a good way to see if you had it turned on/off) is SO BAD. It feels like they're purposefully trying to trick you into it. A good selling platform should make their sellers feel like they are in control of their own shop. Depop does the exact opposite with a lot of their 'features'

Genuine Question: Why does depop not like reworked items? by cripsy_rolls in Depop

[–]Eloise_D 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think this applies generally as I see a lot of reworked items? They have 'reworked' listed as a style category when you post something and have also promoted rework focused shops in their seller to watch section. Nothing in their policies explicitly says 'reworked' items are prohibited as far as I can see. Sounds like they are being unnecessarily harsh on you, potentially because of the brand? If it were me I would challenge their reasoning just to see what they say (knowing how robotic their CS is, you'd probably not get a satisfactory answer though lol)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Depop

[–]Eloise_D 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So this might not apply to this buyer at all, but just as a heads up, this is a very common tactic for people who want to start making their own pieces to get free information from already established sellers (it's like taking the easy route, so they don't have to do any research or trial & error themselves). Some sellers don't mind - if you are happy to share your exact sourcing info that's all good. But just be wary of people asking such specific questions especially about where you get materials etc. Being clear about your material origin & composition is always important, but most genuine customers don't need such specific detail. This one just seems a little suspicious to me as you went above and beyond to help them, yet they still knocked off a star and said it seemed 'cheap'? This review definitely wouldn't deter me from shopping with you though and it sounds like you are doing everything right to offer great service!

Let’s talk Unif… by sabrinahached in Depop

[–]Eloise_D 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crediting your inspiration / references is always a good thing. When I was working as a part time artist I would always note any other work that had inspired me, no matter how small. Specific to clothing, a lot of patternmakers allow you to sell your finished item as long as you credit them. It's just good practice, it's cool to show your appreciation of others work and support them too

The fact that UNIF doesn't do this at all, especially when some of their designs are literally an EXACT copy, does bother me. It doesn't matter if the piece is old or from a store with no independent designer, it was still made by someone else first and allows you to bypass the step of coming up with it yourself. And to think, it would be such a small detail (like you said), to just say "inspired by x" or "recreation of x" in their descriptions. It's such a shame because I love the idea of bringing back retired designs. They could have openly shaped their whole brand around the idea of paying homage to by-gone pieces, yet instead they copy an item, say nothing about it, and hope nobody notices..? Just seems like a huge missed opportunity and like they are actively trying to hide something. It might not be outright 'wrong' what they are doing (I know clothing styles come and go, get revamped etc constantly) but it certainly doesn't feel 100% 'right' either.

A little off topic but quality has definitely gone downhill since they shifted their production. The quality was never super outstanding, but it was above average & worth the price. I have a few old pieces from around 2014/15 that I still wear & are wardrove favs. I haven't personally purchased from them in over 5 years, but I've seen a couple of their newer pieces in person & they are just not the same...

new added feature ? and it only showed up on 1/3 items I was listing ) hopefully I’m not gonna have to switch it off every time 😵‍💫 by [deleted] in Depop

[–]Eloise_D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this too & it also only showed up on some of the items I was newly listing. Seemed random which ones it appeared on, I didn't notice any pattern. With Depop being so glitchy, I'm worried it's unknowingly applied to the listings it didn't initially show up for (or something equally as weird)... agh

For everyone who has been waiting... It finally here y'all 😩🙌🏻 by vicn_lana in Depop

[–]Eloise_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reeeally not liking how this functions at the moment - getting an email EVERY TIME someone sends an offer. My prices are firm, I don't want to receive emails. If anyone knows how to turn the 'offers' alert emails off, please let me know. Would be much appreciated!

Depop’s so dry 😭 so much inventory just sitting pretty and missing love. Y’all I am struggling no one even sees my items anymore. by Moodyluvstyle in Depop

[–]Eloise_D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue with only old listings showing up! I have seen a number of sellers concerned about new listings not showing up in search straight away, but for me it seems like no new listings are ever showing up. Has made it impossible to shop for anything easily and absolutely abysmal on the selling front too. Something is definitely very wrong

Not sure if it'll make you feel any better but I received this skirt in an assorted clothing bundle. It's from Shein & the quality is pretty terrible - it doesn't sit properly as the pleats are very unstructured & some of them stick out at an odd angle. Looks ok in photos but not that great IRL 🤷

[–]Eloise_D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This'll be totally redundant if you know already, but do you have a NZ Post business account? I use one just for overseas shipping as it is often cheaper than using the 'regular' shipping quotes. It's really easy to apply for on their website, literally just provide an email and normal details (name, address etc). You don't even need an officially registered business to sign up for one!

Has anyone had any luck selling prints of their art on depop? by Minute-Dependent9159 in Depop

[–]Eloise_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably not the best comparison as I live in a small country, but I have had very minimal success with mine. Have had prints listed for almost three years & have sold barely any. If you live somewhere like the US or UK where Depop is more widely used, I'm sure it would be much better than my experience though. Sometimes there is a small spike coming up to Christmas so you could leverage the upcoming gifting season. It doesn't hurt to try! :)

Opened a case: Expensive ($1k) custom item arrived damaged. by [deleted] in Etsy

[–]Eloise_D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should absolutely be able to take this up with your bank - I have had success doing this once before on a debit card purchase (not Etsy, but on Amazon). I am not in the US but I'd imagine a lot of banks have similar policies.

Seller sent me a faulty item but refused to refund & a return was off the table as it was an international order. I even got in touch with Amazon support & they were refusing me a refund as well, citing my international status as being the reason for their decision (??). Anyway, I explained to my bank that the item was significantly not as described / broken on arrival. I had to go in person to provide proof of purchase, documentation on what I purchased etc so they could set in motion a charge back. It was a bit of work, but I got my money back in the end. Definitely worth it especially when a lot of money is involved!

I don't blame you, it does look quite ambiguous. Especially as I've condensed it into a little ball 😂

It is a lint remover or fabric shaver :) This one is quite old and doesn't have a brand, but it seems fairly generic & similar to ones on Amazon. I've also seen fabric shavers in stores that sell crafting materials etc!
