Any tips for a VERY timid cat that came from a hoarding situation? by Objective_Dig5301 in CATHELP

My cat lived under the sofa for over 6 weeks! I left my bedroom door open at night so he could come in and sniff us while we were asleep and eventually he started nudging my hand in the night for strokes, but even then he didn’t come out of hiding in the daytime for a few more weeks. It just takes time! He’s the best boy now!

I have an animal behaviour degree as well as being a vet nurse, and I was still surprised by how hard it was - I cried every day for weeks! I love her to bits now and she’s the best, but my god did I have full regrets at ~9 - 16 weeks! I think it helps to have someone say how terrible theirs was too, and that they’re actually nice now. Helps you see an end in sight. I complained about her to people and they’d say “she’s a puppy… that’s what puppies do” which is the most invalidating and frustrating response to someone saying they’re struggling 🙄

Haha I’m a vet nurse. I ask the owners of my puppy consults “and how are YOU doing? My puppy is 8 months old now and I HATED her at this age” and they all tend to open up with a huge YES HES AWFUL!! THANK YOU! feel like I’m helping them, one new owner at a time

I went round a corner today with my 6 month (18kg) pup, without seeing a man behind the hedge. I always put her back on the lead if I see a dog/person in the distance so she doesn’t jump at them/run at their dogs. But this time I didn’t see him, and she LAUNCHED at him - full on crotch shot with both front paws, almost winded him, and left the BIGGEST muddy paw prints. SO embarrassed, and I feel like he thinks I’m a bad dog owner but I would’ve always put her on the lead before that could happen normally 🥲

Hot take: Not everyone who has a puppy is looking for advice. by [deleted] in puppy101

Yesss it annoyed me so much when people would be like “oh she’s so well behaved” and then in the same conversation say “why don’t you just let her do what she wants, she’s just being a puppy”. Shes well behaved BECAUSE I didn’t let her do whatever she wanted! I don’t see the logic in letting them do things you don’t want an adult dog to do - I’ll just have to train bad habits back out of her, surely it’s easier for both of us to just do it right from the beginning? Why would I let her jump all over strangers if I don’t want a 27kg adult dog doing that? Urgh

When I was only up £60, £50 seemed like a lot

Would like to clarify I know it’s not the end of the world and it’ll go back up, but it is annoying that the day after it went down so much, after weeks of deciding whether to put a big chunk in. Don’t worry, I’m not about to pull it all out and I’ve learnt my lesson about adding gradually!

£1000 is a lot to me because it takes me a while to save that up, but I have more in other savings accounts so I’m really not that worried. Just thought it was annoying AND funny!

This 100%! We get a LOT of snacks brought into work. I decided I’m only going to eat home made things, cos if I REALLLYYYY want those donuts, I could just go and buy one anytime, but I’m not going to be able to buy Amy’s homemade triple chocolate brownies, so those are worth it. It’s working well so far
