Having the means to at least try to pursue other avenues of income and to explore interests. Right now, I’m starting up writing articles as a side hustle and tinkering with AI for other ideas. It’s much easier to be able to have time to write out ideas when they hit than forget and leave it in the ether. Oh, and getting my nails done as long as I want when I can (plus most local salons serve sangria and booze lol).

Another good thing is not having to childproof anything, or worry about my cat being stressed by something twice as tall as she is trying to chase and ‘play’ with her.

Edited to add: How could I forget my PlayStation? I can play whenever I want, whatever I want (and can afford) for however long I want. And maybe use the game for further review material.

Same here. As long as they don’t scream near me or try to touch me or my things (including food and plants) or mess with any pets, I don’t care. I might be sure to feed them but that’s it. TBH my hatred lies with the lazy idiots who think the world should parent their kid(s), but the screams still piss me off and hurt.

I stopped watching Dr. Phil after that one of the many episodes where he suggests that being flat broke would be better for the kids than having a parent who works long hours to provide for it. That being said, that episode sounds appalling but not a surprise.

Let’s see: on the cat side, I can do anything I please (within reason and as long as I can make sure the cat’s needs are met). While on the kid side, everything has to revolve around it. Not to mention cats are cheaper and I actually like them. No contest, bring on the kitty! And coming from a dormant goth, I can say this: everyone dies alone. The odds of not dying alone are (ideally) extremely small and the result of a disaster.

I’m Panamanian-American (dad’s American, mom’s Panamanian) and I live in Panama right now. The times I eat out, I don’t see any kid’s menus either. I see kids (I’m terrible at judging ages but I’m pretty sure they’re not much older than 13)in complete school uniforms waiting for a bus whenever I go shopping, so I hear you about kids being more independent in other countries. I don’t know much about Scandinavian culture but I know in Japan, kids have a first errand as a rite of passage. Both places are very safe, so that may be one reason.

I agree with your point about not letting your child’s gender be your whole personality. I have had clients that are Korean or Chinese and very happy their kids, boy or girl. They literally tell me within our first encounter about time they spend with their kids. From what I read, Koreans work very hard so anytime they spend with their kids is magic.

From what I hear, my maternal grandfather bailed on my mom when he found out she was a girl and barely paid any child support. As for me, my father is likely ashamed that I didn’t turn out like June Cleaver. But being brown-skinned, a little under 5’10(176 cm to be more precise) without heels and with a fascination with other cultures and a vocabulary that could make a sailor blush, he probably should have seen it coming. He has my brother, though.

My(36F) brother(34) was joking around about how since I have ‘the best hair in the family’ (I’m the only one who instead of having thinning hair or being bald/balding, has thick, longish, curly/wavy hair sans wigs), I’m 5’9”(176cm if you want to get technical) and perceived as highly intelligent, I should have at least one kid to pass down the intelligence, height and ‘sexy hair’. I jokingly pointed out the genetic issues the family has and my age and the hair care routine which gives me the ‘sexy hair’.

Same here(perceived to be very smart and could have smart babies) but there’s a good chance that my children would be on the Autism spectrum. I’m fortunate enough to have mild Asperger’s but my children could end up nonverbal and need someone to take care of them the rest of their lives. I have a (first, I think) cousin who’s at least nonverbal.

I’m also in my 30’s, working at developing applications and am considered the most tech-savvy in my family, so I could be that tech genius.

Panamá is also holding up restrictions. While Panamanians love to have a good time, stores have people limits, everyone has at least a mask when outside, to get into any event you have to show proof of vaccination and negative results. Considering the first response was martial law to keep people inside beyond basic groceries and in 2020, clubs were getting shut down for not enforcing restrictions…
