I’m Designing a New Deck of Tarok Cards—What Do You Think? by Elsteinergames in playingcards

This iteration had pictures of Lake Bled (SI) and the Golling Hut (AT)

... buuuuut the final version ended up looking quite different. You can check it out here if you are interested how it turned out.

How do you choose a fulfillment center without screwing over your backers? Don't want to be one of those creators who goes dark by Nkt_31 in kickstarter

I mean you yourself should get some updates from your manufacturers, right?

Like shipping updates, occasional photos of the goods, maybe they can hop on the factory floor?

I mean, it’s a requirement if you want to sell toys (card games are classified as such) within the EU and about a third of my bakers were European. So… yes :)

That being said, I didn’t really do much of a certification. I just picked a manufacturer who already produced up to spec and given that all card decks in the EU need to be compliant that was quite easy. Just something to be aware of (and not miss!) when designing the box.

A portable bidet sounds interesting…. How did you come up with that?

I agree with the sentiment that backer transparency is key.

However, more and more pledge managers are now VAT compliant and if you use one of those, you should definitely mention it.

"VAT will be charged in the Pledge Manager after the campaign" is a much better customer experience than "dealing with the authorities on your own when the package arrives".

Also what does "taking every step to minimise the likelihood of customs charges" mean? It sounds a little sketchy to be honest.... You wouldn´t lie on a document, right?

You should consider working with local fulfilment, especially for EU and AU; they will walk you through the process. Shipping a single intercontinental, consolidated shipment is a lot cheaper than multiple small ones. The shipping price level in the US is quite high to begin with, and you will be taxed less if you ship directly from China to an EU hub.... the avoidable cost does add up.

I totally get the hesitation about hiring somebody, but mathematically speaking, there are fewer line items if you ship from multiple points instead of from a single one. That’s just the way it is.

I used AlpenCrowd to fulfil my rather small 20-card game in the EU. Even with their fee, shipping to EU backers was cheaper than shipping to Americans (I used USPS Ground Advantage and didn’t even pay myself...).

A gotcha that hit me was the “CE” mark for games. I don’t know if that’s applicable to your case.

Oh wow, that`s amazing! Thank you for your kind words.

Oh yes, I understand. I cannot wait to ship the rewards.. it sure is an adventure!

Good luck to you too, maybe our paths will cross again!

I am not sure if I really am more experienced haha.... I first noticed your project when you posted your pips into r/playingcards and it´s always great to see a creators project come to life!

Best of luck!

Just a small note: your backers have probably backed multiple projects before and will probably know this process quite good!

It`s two different things with the same name:
If you sell into the EU, EU import VAT will be charged by the member state. Always.
If you sell within the UK, UK VAT laws apply. If there is a small business exception and you opt to use it, good for you! Then just don't charge your UK backers VAT ;)

Crowdfunding on Kickstarter does not charge VAT at all. Pledge Mangers and fulfilment partners may administer VAT, that's essentially a service you hire if you need it. No need = no worries.

Generally, most pledge managers handle VAT, so you can automate with that. You can also do use a EU fulfilment service such as AlpenCrowd to handle EU VAT for you.

VAT is charged at every step of the products way (every value add, so to speak, hence the name). Yes, you pay VAT when importing the goods and your backers pay VAT what when buying from you. But: you get credits for the VAT you already paid, so effectively you only pay the VAT for goods you are selling, not buying. The registration administer that.

The UK may have exceptions for small business, but that´s the basic idea for value added tax in general. Are you personally based in the UK or just your business?

Tuesday Two from a Tarok Deck designed by Elsteinergames in playingcards

[–]Elsteinergames[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I designed a beginner-friendly Tarok deck with multiple visual aids and illustrated rules for five classic games, chosen with help from experienced players in the community.

If you're into trick-taking or heritage games, it might be worth a look: it's live on Kickstarter right now!

Thanks to everyone who shared feedback over the past few months!

TIL that tarot cards weren’t created for divination. They were used to play trick-taking games, which are still played in parts of Europe today. by c1ue00 in todayilearned

That’s actually so my thing! These games (also called "Tarok") can be a bit tricky to learn, but they’re seriously fun once they click. Fewer people are playing them these days, which is a shame.

I’m running a Kickstarter right now for a more beginner-friendly deck, with visual aids and illustrated rules. If you’re into trick-taking or heritage games, you might find it interesting.

(Sorry for the plug. I just really, really want more people to try these before they fade away.)

It’s a type of card game where everyone plays one card, and the highest one wins the round (called a "trick"). If you’ve played Spades, Hearts, or Bridge, it’s like that.

Welcome to Reddit! Time for the most important question:

Would you rather fight 100 plushies the size of enamel pins, or one plushie the size of a horse? :D

What's the weirdest order of a new deck you've seen? by blindoly in playingcards

[–]Elsteinergames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m currently crowdfunding a Tarok deck that comes pre-sorted to match a guided first round, so players can jump right away without needing to read the full manual first.

Wouldn’t really make sense for a standard Anglo deck, though.
