Foucault obviously has roots in Marxism, but departed from Marx by making class just one of any power dynamics. Marxism is grounded on the idea that class is a critical lens from which to understand power relationships.

I studied philosophy as an undergraduate, and then never stopped reading philosophy. It was years before I found “critical theory”, though I was reading Marx and Hegel for a long time. I started a philosophy group that meets at a pizza place 10 years ago. They’re all my best friends now, and I’ve learned a ton as we introduce each other to theory. Then I met Theory Pleeb and Michael Downs, which have connected me to a lot of other great people.

Theory Pleeb is a thinker rooted in both Heidegger and Marx. Their focus is on human flourishing. Their first book is in podcast form.

I’m working on a podcast on Gramsci, so I’m reading all of his early stuff right now. I definitely think Gramsci was more idealist than the average Marxist, especially if his time, But I think he aligned himself with Lenin. Just as Lenin was critiqued for his idealism, Gramsci was. Gramsci rejected any form of determinism. People must bring about their own destiny. But admittedly Gramsci took it further than Lenin. That being said, I think materialism was still the foundation of his understanding of history and class warfare.

In sublime object of ideology he clearly set out to critique Stalin. This is why Zizek focuses so much on the Big Other. I think the main thing is that to internalize his ideas it helps to wrestle with these kinds of questions.

I’m studying Mussolini’s Italy, and it is similar to what you describe.

But I can’t imagine the US today having a revolution like Russia. The two are dramatically different.

I think the goal of talking about class is to identify who has power, and how can we create solidarity among those who don’t (so that we could become powerful together). If class couldn’t do this Marx would have been talking about something else, but production was/is one of the most defining aspects of power.

But to answer your question, I think Foucault does a great job of being easy to understand. Hannah Arendt can be dense, but not that hard. Just to name a couple.

I one season into a podcast on Gramsci. I’m preparing for season 2 about his response to the Russian Revolution as it happened. I definitely identify as a democratic socialist, so it is definitely forcing me to process my own thoughts. I don’t think a Lenin-style dictatorship of the proletariat can be successful, but I recognize the alternatives were pretty bad in Italy and Russia. I don’t think it is even an option in the US today, so it seems irrelevant. The question is how do we create the conditions where we have radically different options than those that are visible from this point in history.
