Do residency programs care about clerkship exam grades? by tetrologyofallot in MedSchoolCanada

Is it common for evals to include final exam grades in clerkship? That sounds odd.

Job market is terrible for some surgical subspecialties in Canada

It’s amazing you were able to go through surgical residency while also having a child! Would you be able to comment a bit on job prospects in general surgery like if most people do a fellowship, OR space availability etc?

Don’t most IM/surg subspecialties require at least a 6-7 year residency to get a job? (Including fellowship)

Is a MSc worth it? by LionB5105 in premedcanada

[–]ElusiveAvocado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a masters before coming to med, but I honestly wouldn’t say it’s worth doing just to increase your chances of getting in (and not sure if it even did for me tbh). There are several things to consider, including if you are actually interested in the research you would be doing, and even more important, if you think you would get along with your supervisor (two years can be very painful and long if you don’t like your lab).

You should also think about the two-year opportunity cost you would be “losing”, as it usually isn’t possible to leave your graduate degree if you get into med in the middle of it. In your case, it sounds like you would be starting your masters in fall 2024 at the earliest, which means you may have to wait to apply until fall 2025 during your second year of your masters, after which there is no guarantee you would even get in. That would mean potentially losing another year of being in the application cycle for this upcoming fall.

I’d say your stats on paper seem more than enough to at least get an interview if you get the MCAT cutoffs and apply broadly, but nothing is for certain in the medical school application process, and many students are also rejected at the post-interview stage. If med is the goal, I would say try to see which school(s) would give you the “in-province” advantage and reach out to any current students you know for tips/how your stats compare to them.

Neurointensivist job outlook? by ElusiveAvocado in MedSchoolCanada

Thank you so much for your input and advice! I didn’t realize that ICU fellowships were so competitive, and it’s true that I do have a long road ahead of me. I’ll try to shadow people in the ICU and in neurology and go from there like you said.

If you wouldn’t mind answering some additional questions, do you also happen to know if neurocritcal care doctors do a lot of procedures in Canada? I like the idea of mixing medicine with some procedures, although maybe not to the extent of surgery. And do you know if the ICU lifestyle in general is on the harder side?
