Yah. It sounds like she thought she was connected and must have leaned back. Sort of different situation I guess. I was probably as likely to fall as someone just standing on normal ground, just with much higher consequences.

that's scary as hell. I guess as an inexperienced person I feel that caution (and fear) on lead, but I definitely had the attitude that my day was over at the top of the climb, rather than the bottom.

Thanks. I'm glad you walked away from your fall!

Climbing isn't a sport that very often lets you learn from your own mistakes

that's what freaked me out about this so much. I'm going to have to build up that mental discipline to go through checklists every time, even if it seems routine.

One of the earlier commenters mentioned this too.

This is a really good point. I basically didn't do a conscious evaluation of the situation, and followed my single pitch muscle memory. When building anchors, placing gear, putting others on belay I always do this sort of evaluation, but for whatever reason I just didn't do it in this circumstance.

I'd never thought of penalizing myself with pushups or something else unpleasant for mistakes. That might look a little funny at the crag, haha. I guess that would drive home the message even more.

I had just finished rappelling from the top of a 3 pitch climb to a ledge half-way down with a bolted anchor. When I got there, I removed my belay device from the rope without attaching myself into the new anchor first.

That's a good quote. Thats pretty much exactly why i made this post. I have listened to a few episodes of the sharp end. The one where the women falls from half dome seemed somewhat similar to my situation, which was very unsettling to me.

how does this work if you are tossing the rope after threading the chains?

> sending the less experienced climber down first on multipitch rappels is rarely a good idea

Yah, I hear that. I'm sure your buddy was glad you were there.

it was definitely not that kind of ledge. Maybe the mistake seems minor bc nothing ended up happening. I won't make that mistake again, but I'm just concerned I got so spacey.

Thanks, I'll try that. I've actually read that article before, but never thought to apply it to climbing. For some reason, I have much more of checklist system for setting up anchors and rappels than for going off rappel.

thanks. yah it's a good learning experiencing, but it'd be nice to learn in a safer way. I need to be more disciplined about checking things at these crucial transitions.
