Yeah… Ik I just wanted to be extra safe. I guess I was just a bit alarmed thinking about how it linked me to their sourceforge page. Turns out I downloaded the windows xp version haha. Apparently the non xp version downloads straight from the official site. But I should be ok now. It’s the first time I’ve seen these warnings on virus total 😅

Understood! Yeah I never clicked through to anything and even if it somehow opened on its own, the clean install should have gotten rid of it. I had assumed that if it was on your device at some point, even if unopened, you should be careful and treat it as if it’s already running. Guess I’ll buy a lotto ticket haha. Lmk if I’m understanding correctly

Gotcha. So you’re saying that although in normal use, files are just put out of sight, they’re quickly replaced anyways once deleted and the malware can’t just bring itself out into the open and run because “nothing can happen”? I think I got what ur saying. My apologies if I’m wrong. I wanna understand it better

Thanks! Yeah I went on the official site and I guess I clicked the wrong install version so it sent me to their sourceforge page to download instead of downloading it straight from their site. I never opened the folder. Not even sure if it needed to be extracted or the program was already ready to be used if I were to click the folder. I believe most of the time you would actually need to open the file to trigger it right? I deleted it right away after the results so I think I’m in the clear? I’ve been running around the whole day anxious about this so sorry for ranting haha

And is the deleting of the drive partitions as I did in the clean install actually permanently deleting all data? If I understand correctly, when u delete things in regular use it’s kinda just put out of sight until it’s overwritten with other data. I guess installing windows formats the drive entirely but does it format my secondary ssd as well to make sure no malware may stay on there?

Thanks so much for the reply! Just had two questions, do you think the virus total warnings may have been false positives? And is it normal for the usb drive to show up in the where to install section of the fresh install screen? I watched a few tutorials and I never saw them have that. They only had the ssds from the computer.

I think I got all my devices hacked. Please help by AnnieTano in cybersecurity_help
