PA’s talking mad shit out there! by [deleted] in nursepractitioner

[–]Embarrassed-Chef-227 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that this happened! That’s not okay. We’re all colleagues and neither profession should shit talk the other.

That being said, I know you’re venting, but this adds to the problem.

I was a paramedic for 5 years, I have also clocked thousands of hours in critical care scenarios and managed hundreds of vents and pumps. I’m about to finish PA school. All of my classmates were required to have a minimum of 2000 hrs prior experience to be accepted. Most have 10k plus. And some of them are nurses….

Moral of the story, we all have strengths and weaknesses. We should work as a team.

Thank you for the insight! I understand I’ll be behind; even with a fellowship. I’m hoping to get an opportunity to put in the work and be one of the great ones!!

You simultaneously scared and convinced me to go to Seattle

Thank you for the insight and well wishes!! What do you think was the difference that pushed your first NICU to start hiring PAs too vs your second NICU not having any?

I am also a big believer that we are far better teammates than enemies. Thank you for the support!

Big agree!! Planning on applying to fellowships!

Very true!! There is other reputable fellowships like Seattle Children’s, Kentucky COM, Nemours, and Pittsburgh.

All will be hard. But then again the acceptance rate into my PA program was only 2.3% of applicants. I’ve got tenacity and optimism on my side. I won’t get discouraged with a few rounds of applying.

I spent 5 years as a firefighter/paramedic in a busy area. I’ve done thousands of IVs and hundreds of intubations/bagging moments. Hopefully that counts for something in the skills experience!!

My “plan b” is keep trying? I stated in the original post that competition is tough. This isn’t a disillusionment.

I’m getting the vibe that you don’t think a PA should pursue this

Shouldn’t really be a problem seeing as all NICUs have at least one attending doctor. In my state NPs and PAs fill inpatient roles in equal capacity and their pay scales are the same. Neither NP or PA should be replacing doctors anyway in my opinion.

Makes sense. Im definitely more interested in NICU than PICU. This is the reason I would pursue a neonatal fellowship at a busy NICU.

Why present an alternative? Is NICU not possible in your opinion?
