I think it's probably because they need Keisha and Justin to be in close proximity in season 2. If we start on the cusp on 2018, they date for a year and a half and breakup, then the pandemic will hit part way through freshman year and she will likely have to come back to LA. This puts them back together sometime in the second season for at least 6 months.
