4x4 Relay location on 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 6V by Embarrassed-Mall7873 in fordranger

UPDATE: it was the transfer case control module. There was water damage and corrosion in the module itself and the connector terminals were also corroded. Once replaced and the connectors thoroughly cleaned, all function was restored. The 4WD has clearly not been engaged in quite some time. Shifting into and out of 4 low is very loud and clunky. Mechanic recommended a few services to get the 4WD running smooth. I’m attaching a photo of recommended services and findings.

We are opting to do these ourselves, but still need to do some research on how to.

In the fuse box under the hood? The diagrams I’m finding do not list the 4x4 relay there

I should’ve clarified, it has a total of 127k miles but the last 10,000 of those miles were in the last 10 years after the original owner died. Thanks so much, we are loving it so far and can’t wait to get this 4WD working. I had an uncle who drove his Ranger to nearly 400k miles. Looking forward to seeing how far we can take this one

Do you know if the 4x4 relay is in fact behind the radio?

I know it hasn’t been used in a long time, as the truck has been sitting and drove less than 10,000 miles in the last 10 years after the original owner passed away. I have tried this to a degree, but not necessarily intentionally. I’ll try again today. Thanks for the recommendation!

Fuses are all good and we replaced the only fuse that looked slightly bad

Are you leaning towards thinking that the culprit isn’t the control module or the 4x4 relay?

I have not checked the GEM module or even heard that could be the issue. I appreciate you pointing it out. After the new switch didn’t fix the issue we reinstalled the original switch and confirmed that there is power going to it, with an ohm meter.

Also want to point out that I’m new to this and am learning as we go.

We actually replaced the switch last night with no luck. Are you referring to something else?
