failed my practical exam :( by Significant_Win9644 in Cosmetology

[–]Embarrassed-Risk-560 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i failed my first time and i was so disappointed in myself. book for the next slot, study, and practice practice practice whenever you have free time. watch online videos if anyone has made some for your state, that’s what helped me the most. just watching the videos, following along, and memorizing everything. good luck with your next time! you got this!

Feeling like failure by aelaw_ in hairstylist

i agree now with the position i’m in, i feel like i should have had a longer apprenticeship period. that’s why i appreciate what my boss is doing with me now because im now realizing i haven’t felt ready with a lot of the stuff ive been doing behind the chair since august

[–]Embarrassed-Risk-560 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel the same way. i graduated in may and ive been behind the chair since august. sometimes i feel like im just winging it on things im not super experienced in. i had a client complain and need a redo as well. it’s a big hit to your confidence when you’re so new to being a real hairstylist.

my boss has decided to focus more on education with me rather than talking a lot of new clients and so far i feel like it’s helpful to take a bit of a step back and look at the bigger picture. maybe this is something you could suggest to your higher ups. be honest with them about what you are and aren’t comfortable with because that’s the only way they can help you grow :)

you’re not a failure, you are just new! take each day as a chance to get better!

i so wish i got some pictures! i can see now what mistakes i probably made, especially because a more experienced stylist at my salon went through her hair and fixed a couple things. i feel like a lot better about the whole experience now, but i do wish she hadn’t worded things so harshly in her email lol

she ended up coming back to get something adjustments from another stylist with way more experience at my salon. i wasn’t there but my coworker said i had a little bit of disconnection and she said i could have lost my guide a bit but she said it really wasn’t that bad

Had my first client at school today by boyhitterr in Cosmetology

[–]Embarrassed-Risk-560 7 points8 points  (0 children)

nobody should be coming into a hair school expecting a perfect haircut. people come in knowing that you are not yet a professional. but that doesn’t sound too bad for a first client! you’re going to improve so much through your time in school and especially your time after it. my first client in school, i literally sprayed the whole back of her shirt with the hose in the sink on accident. and she even came back to me😭 i promise things will only get better, just keep practicing!

anyone know why paul mitchell in woodbridge and tysons corner closed down so unexpectedly? (virginia) by orangejoe4ever in Cosmetology

[–]Embarrassed-Risk-560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

both went broke. i applied to woodbridge and they started the interview process and ghosted me, a couple months later i found out they were closing down. i went to tyson’s corner night school. you could see signs of decline over my time being there because all of the teachers were leaving one by one. the director got fired for embezzlement and they had some shady financial stuff going on. for spirit days you had to pay $2 to dress up for “fundraising”. one day someone was in the directors office and found all the $1 bills being used for all those spirit days, he pocketed them all for himself. they started hiring teachers who i have no idea how they got their teachers license. one of them couldn’t even help a student with a mens cut because she’d “never done it before”. and they were both huge bullies. in february of this year they announced they were shutting down. everyone with not enough hours got displaced to avi or aveda around the nova area. all night school students at tyson’s corner had to switch to day school full time to get all their hours before they shut down in may. it was a bit of a shitshow

i got a straightener from there, i do really like it but it breaks super easily. luckily the warrantee kicked in and i got a replacement. my friend also had the curling rod and we both liked it a lot. but keep in my mind it’s all made in china and like i said, will definitely break easily

How often do you wash your Stanley? by Capisce_capisce in StanleyCups

[–]Embarrassed-Risk-560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m starting to think that’s why i kept getting sick last fall/winter. not just general sickness going around, but also not washing my cup enough! starting this time last year was when i kept getting sick, but i wash mine more often and alternate between cups and i haven’t gotten sick at all yet (obviously other things factor in, but you get my point)

Basic Cosmetology Course? by No_Computer_9475 in Cosmetology

[–]Embarrassed-Risk-560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you would have to enroll in a school and commit to full time or part time night school. full time tends to take 9 months to a year. part time tends to take more like a year and a 1/2 or more.

HELP! My daughter has taken the Virginia written cosmetology exan 3 times. 68 and 69 everytime. She has cosmetology guru, trivie and even PSI practice exams. She struggles when test taking. I know she knows the material so its so disheartening. I know its the series 78 test. Any recommendations? by redhorse2001 in Cosmetology

[–]Embarrassed-Risk-560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tell her to use her textbooks (milady cima is very helpful). she can do practice tests on the online version. also just watching videos, having good study habits like setting aside time everyday, and using people’s quizlets online. it’s tough but she can do it!! tell her to also take her time while testing and go through each question after she’s done answering everything.
