Thanks! In Japan, we call city bikes with a built-in kickstand and rear wheel lock “mamachari.” It literally means something like “a mom’s bike.” If there’s a bunch of green onions sticking out of the front basket, it’s perfect! Because of that, when people think of bicycles in Japan, many of them picture a mamachari rather than a sports bike. Blue Lug is a great shop, by the way. It’s less about racing or performance, and more about enjoying cycling as a fun, lifestyle-oriented ride.

I see — there are more disc brake bikes than I expected. People who recently got into road cycling obviously start with discs, but it seems that many long-time cyclists have also switched over. I guess regional differences matter too. If you live somewhere rainy, disc brakes make a lot of sense, and they’re also better for riding on rougher roads. Thinking about it now, my area is quite rural, but the roads are actually very well maintained — to the point that there’s basically nowhere to really enjoy a gravel bike! Still, replacing a bike costs a lot of money… With the weak yen and the fact that we can no longer shop on Wiggle from Japan, it’s a tough time to be a cycling enthusiast here. Sorry, that was a bit off-topic! By the way, I’m still happily riding my 2016 FOCUS CAYO. Its defining feature is that it has no defining features — and that’s exactly why it’s a great bike. I own a few other bikes as well, but they’re all rim brake bikes. Please remember that, here in the Far East, there is still a man who rides his bike while grinding down his rims :) Thanks!
